(Transcription) Alexander Reed's Will I Alexander Reed of the county of Rockbridge and state of Virginia, being infirm in body, but of sound mind and memory. Do make this my last will and testament in the manner and form following Viz-- Iteem it is my desire that as soon as convenient after my death my Executors hereafter named, shall sell one black horse called Rack, one black mare called Pigeon, and if that is not sufficient, such other property as can be best spared from the use of my famely, and out of the money arising thereform, that all my Funeral expences, and just debts of this neighbourhood be paid. Item I give and bequeath unto my wife Martha Reed one black horse called Dick, her saddle and bridle and bed and furniture, for ever, and the benefit of one third part of the plantation where I now live joining the lands of Joseph Wilson and William Campbell to be laid off in shaper not to exceed double the length of its bredth by him paying his proportionable part of the money not yet paid to Laurence Bowman and his assigns being the purchase money of said tract of land. Item I give and bequeath unto my two sons James Reed and Hugh Reed the balance of said tract of land to be laid off in equal Devision paying due respect to quantity and quality by each of them paying their proportions of the purchas money of said land, not yet paid, according to the land which they do possess and also they shall pay one hundred pounds, Virginia currency to be equally divided amongst my five daughters Nancy Reed, Jinny Goodwin, Barbery Reed, Rebecca Kiger & Betsy Reed, to be paid in installments of twenty five punds annually, the first to be due on the first of October one thousand eight hundred and nineteen-- Item. The condition of the above obligation is such, that if the above bound Adam Wilhelm who hat been duly chosen and appointed guardian of Elizabeth J. Being frail in Body but of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life do make and declare this my last will and testament in maner and form following. Viz First I Commend my soul to Almighty God in hopes of a Glorious Refsurection at the Last day and my Body I comit to the earth to be decently intered at the descretion of my Executors hereafter named as touching my wordly estate as it hath pleased God to blefs me withal I dispose of the same as followeth, Viz Imprimus I will that all my lawfull Debts be paid as I hope that God for Christ Sake will forgive all debts mine. Secondly I will and bequeath to my son George Black the proffit of the plantation he now lives on his lifetime and at his death to descend to his Daughter Sarah Black to her or her heirs forever. Thirdly I will and bequeath to James Black George Blacks son one hundred acres by deed of John Scot with the half of another Survey of ninety four acres to him and his heirs forever. Fourthly I will and Bequeath to Robert Black George Blacks son the plantation whereon I now live containing one hundred and sixteen acres with the half of another Survey of Ninty four acres his part to be next the Creek fifthly if either of these Heirs should die before the arive at mature age then their part to be devided equaly Betwixt the two surviving Heirs and in case two of the sd Heirs should die before the com of age then the third to (enjoy the*) whole. Fifthly I will and Bequeath to my Daughter Jeny Black the sum of twenty pounds to be paid in six anual payments by my Executor hereafter named. Sixthly I will and Bequeath to my well beloved wife Sarah Black the proffits of all the Land excepting that left to Sarah Black George Blacks Daughter (with*) all the Household and Kitching furniture with one young Horse two Cows her lifetime then after her death (all the moveables*) to be sold and the money to be devided equaly between the three Heirs Viz Sarah. Jane (James*) and Robert Black my Grand children. But I reserve sixteen feet square out of the one hundred and sixteen acres for a burying place. Not to be occpd by any one forever. And as touching an entry joining Robert Clark Colonel McDowell and John Cunningham I give to my son George Black I likewise derect that my Executors do covey to john Cunningham a certain tract of land containing seventy two acres as soon as he complys with the terms of an agreement entered between him and myself the second day of June 1813. Lastly I appoint my two worthy friends Viz William Wilson and John Patton my Executors of this my last will and testament, Revoking disannuling and making void all former Will and Bequeaths by me made and declaring this only my last will and testament. (1) Last Will and Testament of Robert Black Continued I Robert Black do make this Codicil to this my last Will & testament (to wit,) whereas an error is comited in writing the same in bequeathing the tract of Land on which my son George lives to two of his children it is my (will*) that it descend to my Grandson James Black & the half of the ninety four acre tract & to my Grand daughter Sarah Black I bequeath a tract of ninety two acres, & ten ares held in partnership with James Caruthers not mentioned in the place of Land mentioned to her in this will. I likewise direct that my Executors do rent out all my Lands, except the place on which my son George lives & After the maintance of my wife the surplus (if any*) to go towards the discharge of my own debts if any remain unpaid & a Debt due to Wm Willson & one to Willson & Patton both together amounting to about one hundred Dollars (at this time*) & afterwards the rents to be distributed as in my said Will directed the above Debts of about one hundred dollars being due by George Black to sd Willson& Willson & Patten. I, the said William Black, do make and publish this my last will and testament in the manner and form following, to wit First. I commend my immortal soul to God who gave it to me and my body to the earth to be buried in a christian like manner. I wish all of my funeral charges and just debts to be paid as soon as pofsible after my death, and as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased the Lord to Blefs me with I give and dispose of the same as follows. Second. To my beloved wife Elizabeth, for the purpose of raising and educating my children the use and full control of all my lands until the 19 of September 1863 at which time I direct that the one third of my land to be laid of and afsigned to my wife Elizabeth during her lifetime, and at her death to be equally divided and afsigned between my five children as follows. To Frances Jane one fifth, To John Tucker one fifth, his mother to have the use and control of it until he is of age. Andrew Crawford, One fifth, his mother to have the use and control of it until he is of age. Mary Elizabeth one fifth her mother to have the use and control of it until she is of age, and James Addison the remaining one fifth, his mother to have the use and control of it until he arrives of age. Thirdly, I give to my wife Elizabeth our bed bedstead and bedding, and cupboard and its furniture, and one side saddle. Fourthly. To my daughter Frances Jane one feather bed, bedstead & furniture. Fifthly, To my son John my Rifle gun with its fixtures. Sixthly, To my son, Andrew my saddle. Seventhly, To my daughter Mary Elizabeth, one feather bed, bedstead and furniture. Eighthly, To my son James Madison* one saddle to be paid for by my five children, when he arrives at the age of twenty one. Ninthly, It is my will and wish that all the residue of my personal estate shall be sold by my executor and after paying all my just debts the residue arising from said sale if any shall be paid over to my wife Elizabeth. Tenthly, I direct that my wife Elizabeth receive from my Executor all of the property which I have left to my children and take care of it for them until they are of age or Marry. Eleventhly, I do hereby appoint my friend John B Sach Executor of this my last will and testament. Harris to be executor of this my last will and testament and further that my executor James H. Harris do rent the said land first to discharge my just debts should I have any and afterwards for the entire benefit of the said Nancy Jane Green. Harris At Rockbridge County Court May 6, 1861 the last will and testament of Thomas Green deceased was produced in court proved by the oaths of Robert Harris one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and the signature of Robert C. Harris, the other subscribing witness thereto proved by the oath of Robert Harris and ordered to be recorded. And James H. Harris, the executor named in said will having removed on the motion of Henry B. Jones who made oath and together with Josiah S. McNutt his security who justified as to his sufficiency entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of four hundred dollars conditioned according to law, certificates was granted him to obtain letters of administration with the will annexed on the estate of Thomas Green deceased in the due & proper forms: Said bond is ordered to be recorded. In the fourth place I will and bequeath to my friend David Potter who formerly lived on this my plantation who is now living on the plantation of Mr. Samuel Wilson of Rockbridge county Va two hundred dollars worth of my land to be laid of where my Execator thinks proper. In the fifth place to my friend Mary Oliver an infant girl whome I hve raised from an infant I will and bequeath all my remaining land and personal property of whatever kind or discription my meaning is to said Mary Oliver and her heirs forever lastly I hereby appoint John McFaillon?
