Port Republic Virginia is located at the junction of the Middle and the South Forks of the Shenandoah River. It was settled in the mid 1700’s and was the site of a battle of the Civil War May 5 1862. It was incorporated as a town in 1802. There is a small museum {The Frank Kemper Home}and at least three cemeteries. One of which is across the street from the Methodist Episcopel Church and contains monuments to former ministers and two or three other stones as well as a very curious mule. The second is located along the west bank of the South River and is the cemetery enumerated below. In that cemetery there are several family areas that have iron fencing around them as well as several graves that are not in fenced areas. The 49 memorial stones that remain cover death dates from 1839 to 1898 and are scattered over a fairly wide area. It is clear that there are many unmarked graves in the spaces between, some of which are can be located by the depressions in the earth & some that have head or footstones but no inscriptions There are 3 fenced in areas which have no memorial stones. Those graves may have had memorial stones at one time which have been removed by flooding or vandels. Or they may have merely had marker stones at the head and foot. There are certainly some known individuals whose graves are probably here, in that they died in Port Republic during the time that this would have been the cemetery in use. There is a goat in a shed in the northwest corner. There is a third cemetery which is newer, larger, & better kept on small hill to the west of town.
