Persons or organizations desiring to use this material, must obtain the written consent of the contributor, or the legal representative of the submitter, and contact the listed USGenWeb archivist with proof of this consent. ************************************************************************ Contributed by Ranette Bell *********************************************************************** The indenture reads: "This indenture made on the 16th day of July 1799 by and between Adam Cline and Susannah his wife of the County of Rockingham and state of Virginia are the one part and George Gongwere of the same county and State are afforesaid on the other part - Witnesseth that the said Adam Cline and Susannah his wife in consideration of the sale of one thousand one hundred and twenty dollers seventeen cents in hand paid the receipt thereof, is hereby acknowledge hath given granted ??? and sold unto the said--George Gongwere a certain tract or piece of land in the county of Rockingham, containing by estimation one hundred and thirty one acres be the same ??? or selfs being a remainder of a Serger tract of land first granted to Casper Miller by patent bearing date the 27th day of August 177? and containing one hundred and sixtyfour acres reference thereunto will more fully and at large--appear B(could be bound or bordering) followers to with, B eginning at a Hickory and pine corner to Miller and are the grant live there with the ???coursey of the Same North Eightyfive degrees east thirty two poles to a pine thence south seventyfive degrees east forty poles to a black oak sapling on a ridge thence north thirtyfive degrees east one hundred poles to two black oak saplings thence north one hundred an fiftyeight poles to three black oaks and white oak. Thence south eighty degrees west, fortypoles to three black oaks thence south west one hundred and fifty seven poles to a black oak Millers Corner thence a cross the tract with the line of said Miller south fortyone degrees East one hundred and two poles to the Beginning. Wit all its appurtenances to the said George Gongwere his heirs and ??? for over and the said Adam Cline and Susannah his wife for themselves their heirs executors and administrators do covenant with the said George Gongwere and his heirs that them the said Adam Line and Susannah his wife and their heirs executors and administrators the said tract of land with it appurtenances to the said George Gangwere and his heirs and offspring(?) will forever warrent and defend in witness whereof the said Adam Cline and Susannah his wife have hereunto set their hand seal on the day and year afforesaid. Gambitt ( It is not signed by Adam Cline and an X is given with notation "her Mark" and then someone signed "Susanah Cline" The name above Susannah appears to be Ja??r Klein). ********************************************************************** Indenture The Commonwealth of Virginia to Andrew Shauklen and Asher(n) Waterman gentlemen Justices of Rockingham country, greeting: Whereas Adam Cline and Susanna his wife, by their certain indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the 16th day of July 1799 have fold and conveyed unto George Gongwere one hundred thirty one acres of land with the appurtenances, lying and being in the county of Rockingham and whereas the said Susanna cannot conveniently travel to our County court of Rockingham to make acknowledgement of the said conveyance. Wherefore we do give unto you, power to receive the acknowledgement which the said Susanna Cline shall be willing to make before you of the conveyance aforesaid contained in the said indenture which is hereunto annexed. And we do therefore command you, that you do personally go to the said Susanna and receive her acknowledgement of the same, and examine her privily and apart from the said Adam Cline her husband, whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily, without his persuasion or threats, and whether she be willing that the same shall be recorded in our county court of Rockingham aforesaid: And when you have received her acknowledgement and examined her as aforesaid, that you directly, plainly and openly certify us thereof, in our ??id county court, under your hands and self, sending then there the said indenture and this write. Witness SAMUEL McWILLIAMS, Clerk of our said Court at the Court-House, this 19th day of August 1799 in the 24th year of the Commonwealth. L. W. By virtue of the above commission to us directed, we do hereby certify, that we did personally go to the above named Susanna Cline and examined her privily and apart from the above named Adam Cline her husband: And we further certify, that she declared the she freely and voluntarily acknowledged the indenture hereunto annexed, and that she did it without the persuasions or threats of her said husband, and that he was willing the same shall be recorded in the county court of Rockingham.
