Israel May to David Bowman deed - 1855 - Rockingham Co., VA This Deed, made the 5th day of September, 1855, between Israel May & Rebecca his wife of the county of Rockingham, and State of Virginia of the one part, and David Bowman of the county of Rockingham, and State of Virginia, of the other part, Witnesseth: That the said Israel May & Rebecca his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of Twelve hundred dollars, cash in hand paid, the receipt where of is hereby acknowledged, to grant unto the said David Bowman a certain lot or parcel of land, lying and being in the county of Rockingham and State of Virginia, and bounded as follows: Beginning at a stone near a large white oak, Minnicks corner, thence S 74 1/4 W 26 1/2 poles to a stone, Tussinger's corner, thence with his line S 46 1/2 E 17 1/8 poles to a stone by a spring, thence S 73 1/2 E 62 poles to a stone on the Ridge, thence W 33 1/2 E 23 poles to two white oaks on the Ridge & corner to the Cook tract, thence with a line of the said tract S 46 1/2 E 67 3/4 poles to two hickorys, corner to Lohr, thence with his line N 43 E 23 3/4 poles to a stake, thence N 46 1/2 W 58 poles to a stake corner to Leanah (?) May, thence with her line N 33 1/2 E 24 1/4 poles, to a hickory tree Dower line, thence with said line N 67 1/2 W 14 poles to a stake Dower corner thence N 33 1/2 E 32 poles to the beginning corner of Dower lot thence N 52 W 76 1/5 poles to a chesnut (sic) oak Garber's corner thence S 29 W 55 1/2 poles to a Hickory & sasafraz (?) saplings, thence S 17 W 41 3/4 poles to the Beginning containing sixty acres be the same more or less. and the said Israel May & Rebecca his wife release unto the said David Bowman all claim or claims upon the said lot or parcel of land, and the said grantors covenant that they will warrant generally the property hereby conveyed; that they have the right to convey the said property to the said grantee; that the said grantee shall have quiet possession of the same, free from all incumbrances; that they will execute such further assurances of the said property as may be requisite, and that they have done no act to incumber the said property. Zirkle, Justices of the Peace for the County of Shenandoah, in the State of Virginia, do certify that Rebecca May the wife of Israel May, whose names are signed to the writing hereto annexed, bearing date on the 5th day of September, 1855, personally appeared before us in the county aforesaid, and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband, and having the writing aforesaid fully explained to her, she, the said Rebacca May acknowledged the said writing to be her act, and declared that she had willingly executed the same, & does not wish to retract it.
