Inscribed on the Roll of Virginia at the rate of 20 Dollars per annum to commence on the 4th day of March 1831. High Street Landon, Ohio Dear Madam You are advised that it appears from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim S5708, that Michael Lore was born October 6, 1755, near York, Pennsylvania. While a resident of Washington County, Maryland, he enlisted in October 1781, and served six months as a private in Captain Ott's Maryland Company. He was allowed pension on his application executed October 15th 1833, while a resident of Rockingham County, Virginia. There are no data on file relative to his family. The above noted is the history of the only soldier named Michael Lore (searched under all spellings of the surname) that is found on the Revolutionary War records of this bureau. The Revolutionary War records of this bureau fail to afford any information in regard to pension having been claimed by any one as the widow of a soldier named Michael Lohr or Lore. Morgan Acting Commissioner -------------------------------------------------------------------- (Transcription of copy of declaration of Michael Lore) State of Virginia & County of Rockingham to wit: On this 15 day of October 1832 personally appeared in said court, before the Justices of the County Court of Rockingham sitting, Michael Lore a resident of the County of Rockingham and State of Virginia, aged 77 years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States, under the following named officers and served as herein stated. He was born in the State of Pennsylvania near York, on the 6th day of October 1755 and his parents removed to Maryland when he was a small boy and settled in Washington County in that state where he continued to reside until after the Revolutionary War. He has no record of his age. In the month of October 1781 he thinks about the middle of the month he volunteered under Capt. Ott of the Maryland militia, and marched to Fort Frederick in Maryland where there were some prisoners stationed who it was apprehended were in danger of being released from their confinement by the tories who were numerous in that neighborhood. He assisted in guarding the prisoners to Frederick Town Maryland, which was thought to be a place of greater safety. Here he continued until he was discharged after having served six months and got a discharge in writing, signed by Maj. Sweigler of the Maryland Militia which he has lost long since. Was not engaged in any active hostilities during this tour. After the Revolutionary War had closed, he thinks about six years thereafter, he removed to Berkely County Virginia, and resided there about six years and eight months and then removed to Rockingham County where he has resided since. He has no documentary evidence of his service, and does not know of any person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service. He has had but little intercourse with the neighborhood in which he resided during the revolutionary war and since he removed to Virginia and does not know whether any person could be found there who has a personal knowledge of his services. For his standing in his neighborhood and character for veracity, and the belief in his revolutionary service, he refers to Andrew Byrd, Philip Koontz, Lewis Zirkle, Daniel Zirkle & Dr. Williamson a magistrate. He hereby relinquishes his every claim whatever to pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed the day & year aforesaid. his Michael Lore mark Mr. William Bryan a clergyman residing in the County of Rockingham and Andrew Byrd residing in Rockingham hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Michael Lore who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration, that we believe him to be 77 years of age, that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and that we concur in that opinion.
