Mr. Smiley was in his usual health until shortly before Christmas when he took ill. He grew gradually weaker until the end. A son of the late Hugh H. and Mary Glass Smiley, he was born February 4, 1875, near Spring Creek. After his marriage to Miss Lizzie B. Anderson, he purchased the W. L. Anderson homestead and made his home there until 1921 when he quit the farm to follow his trade as a bricklayer, until three years when he retired. While foreman for the Fuller Construction Company, he laid the tile coat-of-arms in the RCA Building in New York City. The many fine homes of brick and stone which he built stand as a memorial to his work which he learned as a youth from his father. Three of his brothers and many of his cousins follow the same trade. While quiet and reserved, Mr. Smiley was held in high esteem by all who knew him and his wise counsel was sought by many. He will be greatly missed in the community and leaves a host of friends who mourn his passing. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter -- Olga; two sons -- Hugh, Jr. and Orville, all at home; four brothers -- James H., of Martinsburg; John W., of Frederick, Md., George H. of Bridgewater; Lewis C., of Dayton; one sister -- Mrs. McCall, of Deerfield. ----------------------------------------------------------------- File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Suzette K.
