He was born in Russell County, the son of the late Arnold and Eula Childress Hensdill. He was retired from Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation after 35 years of service as a surveyor and had worked with Woolpert Engineering in Virginia Beach for 10 years. He enjoyed the company of his friends and colleagues throughout his life and career. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Va. He is survived by his wife, Norma Hensdill of Manquin; a son from a previous marriage, John Hensdill of Seaside, Calif.; one grandson, Jonathan Hensdill of Seaside; three sisters, Shirley Carlson of Abingdon, Jeweldine Hodges of Castlewood and Earnestine Castle of Erwin, Tenn.; two brothers, Doyle Hensdill of Radford and Dennis Hensdill of Castlewood; and many loving nieces and nephews. His closest and lifelong friends were Farrell Shook of Defiance, Ohio, and Niles Meade of Midlothian, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at 2 p.m. in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, with Rev. Paul Bufford officiating. Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, with military rites by Lebanon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9864. Pallbearers will be Darryl Hensdill, Justin Phillips, Jonathan Phillips, Eric Hodges, Patrick Ridge and Bob Carlson. The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood.
