He was born in Russell County, Va., on Nov. 26, 1929, the son of the late William and Effie Burke Mays. He was an operator at the Holston Glass Plant. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertha Robinson and Ethel Salyer. Surviving are his wife, Edith Mays, Nickelsville; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Justin Gillenwater, Gate City; son and daughter-in-law, Lowell and Charlotte Mays, Richmond, Ky.; granddaughter, Chelsea Gillenwater; grandsons, Jordan Gillenwater, Brandon Mays and Shane Mays; step-granddaughter, Shea Muncey; sisters, Ruth Keith, Castlewood and Mrs. A.C. (Stella) Easley, Kingsport; and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the Mountain Empire Older Citizens for their wonderful care and especially Brenda Taylor, Carrie Fields and Pat Grimes and very special friend, Dan Simcox. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville. Friends may also call any time at the residence. Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Steve Collins and Pastor Mike Patrick officiating. Music will be provided by the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville Choir. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Grassey Creek Community Cemetery in Castlewood. The family will meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be deacons of the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville. Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.
