Born March 20, 1913, in Dickenson County, Va., he was a son of the late Ransom Sutherland and Ida Wolfe Sutherland. He was a life long resident of Russell and Tazewell Counties. Mr. Sutherland was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA Local 6633 at Amonate, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Boyd Sutherland; three children, Russell, Raymond and Margaret; two brothers; five sisters; three half brothers; and one half sister. Survivors include four sons, Buster Sutherland of Scottsmoor, Fla., Vern Sutherland of Bandy, Va., Marvin Sutherland of Marion, Va., and Garnett Sutherland, Tazewell; five daughters, Stella Neal of North Tazewell, Lois Pagaliasotti of Glade Spring, Beulah Mintor of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Eula Rizzo and Donna Bobinski, both of Newark, Ohio; one sister, Beatrice Musick of Statesville, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Don Elswick and the Rev. David Nitch officiating. Burial will follow at Russell County Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon, Va. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003.
