Born Feb. 4, 1915, in Russell County, a son of the late George and Maggie Meade Hess. He was a farmer and carpenter. He was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by a son, J.D. Hess; a grandson, Carl G. Hess; three brothers; and four sisters. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Gladys Hess; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sandra and Coy Blankenship and Maggie Ray, all of Lebanon, and Yvonne and Bill Heath of Saluda, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Shella Gene Hess and Jean Hurd; and G.B. and Wilma Hess, all of Lebanon; three sisters, Hazel Miller of Lebanon, Elizabeth King of Kingsport and Ruby Boyd of Hollywood, Fla.; a brother, J.P. Hess of Ocala, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, in Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Taylor and the Rev. Rick Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in Hess Family Cemetery near the home. Pallbearers will be Lee Saunders, Mike Osborne, Graham Ray, Frankie Ball, Ronnie Gilbert, Mitch Leftwich, Dennis Gilbert and Adam Ray. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Gilbert, David Ray, Allen Heath and Charlie Gilbert. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at the funeral home.
