King tibbs43192004@yahoo.com June 11, 2007, 10:49 am Thomas Henry King, Co. E 50th Virginia Infantry, CSA. Thomas Henry King was born at Blacksburg, Va., Montgomery county, 25 Oct.,1837. His parents: Henry Robert King and Jane Cunningham. Spouse: Rachel R. Hubble, (of Hubble telescope fame). They married 1859. In 1861 Thomas enlisted in Co. E, 50th Virginia Infantry, CSA. He was Commanded by General Robert E. Lee, much of the time. He was captured at the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, Va. commanded by General Anderson commanding General Longstreets Corp., on May 12, 1864. Sent to Point Lookout, Md., (prison for Confederates)a few months, then sent to Elmira, N. Y. Prisoners hardly fared better than those at Andersonville. When General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant (He was later to be President of the U. S.) on April 9, 1865, Thomas took an oath and was released May 1865. He had to walk home 300 miles. He told my Dad, William P. King, Sr., (1906-1995) that He couldn't see where He was shooting as the powder wasn't smokeless. He lived in Smyth County, Va., where my Grandfather, Marion Walter King was born 1881. He and His family lived in Lebanon, Russell County, Va. In 1900, Thomas Henry King lived there, age 63 Spouse, Rachill Regina age 62. He died in Lebanon, Russell County, Va., in 1917 and is buried there. He was in several battles, according to His 1902 pension application. Rachel died sometime between 1910 and 1917.
