Resolved Upon Mr Dawson's accepting ye Society, yt Mrs Clayton is willing to accept of ye Place of House-keeper to ye College, yt she is accordingly elected into ye said Place, & allowed ye usual Perquisites, & salary. It is ye opinikon of ye meeting yt Mr Hall Suveyour of Lunenburgh has forfeited his commission by never making regular Payments - not complying with ye Law, in Regard to Residence, and offering to dispose of his Commission upon Terms. Mr Read and Mr Buckner Stith are appointed surveyours for Lunenburgh and Bedford. Mr John Dawson(1) is appointed Surveyour for Albemarle in the Room of Col. Joshua Fry, dec. [42 -- blank] [43] Aug. 29, 1754. At a Meeting of the President and Masters of William and Mary College: Present, The Rev. W. Stith, President, Mr Dawson, Mr Robinson, Mr Preston, Mr Graham and Mr Camm. Mr Dawson is desired to acquaint Mr Kemp yt ye President and Masters are very uneasy at his encourageing the boys to Engage in Racing, and other Diversions contrary to the Rules of the College, and that if he do not desist for ye future they are determined to make a proper Representation thereof to the Court. Mr Dawson is desired to caution Mr Holt agt harbouring any of the College Boys. ___________________________ (1) Probably the father of the Hon. John Dawson, M.C. His inventory is recorded in Albemarle Court, April, 1758. Martin Dawson died in this County in 1821, and among his c hildren was one called John. Page 124. Mr Camm is desired to acquaint Mr Secretary Nelson with the disturbances which have been caused in College by ye turbulent and bad Behaviour of Henry Harrison, a clerk in his office, and request yt he will restrain him from acting in such a manner for the future, by any method he shall think proper. [43 -- Blank] [44] Ordered 1st, That no Boy shall be permitted to saunter away his Time upon any of the College Steps or to be seen playing during School Hours under a severe adnimadversion fm ye President, or any of the Masters. Ordered 2d, That no Boy presume to go into the kitchen, or cause any Disturbance there, under a severe punishment fm the President, or any of the Masters. Ordered 3d, That the Boys regularly attend Dinner, and Supper in the Hall, and yt ye House-keeper be strictly charged and commanded not to allow any Victuals whatever to be sent into Private Rooms to any Boys, excepting to such as are really sick. Because the Scholars either have forgot, or never have been acquainted with what they have a right to as Boarders and Lodgers in the College, and several Instances of improper Conduct have arisen from hence; they are hereby inform'd that fewel and Candles are to be provided at their own expense, and that on no occasion they are to expect either from the College; that in case of sickness, if any constant attendance is necessary, or any particular Diet required, these shall also be got at their own Expense. The College allows only to the Sick Tea Page 125. to be made and sent by the House-keeper, and wine-whey. If any Emergency requires a departure from these Rules, the Application is to be made to the Master for the Week, and not to the House-keeper or Servant. Ordered - yt ye three last Rules be hung up in ye several Schools. WILLIAM STITH, President Sept. 2, 1755, At a Meeting of ye President and Masters of W. & M. Coll: Present, The Rev. Willm Stith, Presdt. Mr Dawson, Mr Robinson, Mr Preston, and Mr Graham. Resol: yt ye Tenants in King Willm County do pay for every 100 Acres granted to ym by any future lease 400 net weight of good merchantable sweet-scented Tobacco, ye Product of ye said Plantation, with cask. Resol: yt ye President & one of ye Masters be desired to visit ye said Plantations, & take an account of ye several Leases, & examine how far the tenants have complied with ye Terms of yir respective Leases. [46] Resol: That where 400 net weight &c. appears to be too much or too little for each 100 acres, the President & one of ye masters have leave to increase or lessen it as seems to them most advantageous or the interest of the College & that whatever Leases they shall think proper to grant, shall be binding upon ye Society. At a Meeting of the Masters of William and Mary College: Present, Ye Revd Mr Dawson, Mr Robinson, Mr Preston and Mr Graham(1). After the death of ye Revd W. Stith, A. M., late President of the College, ye visitors having elected the revd Thomas Dawson President, He qualified himself according to the Statutes by subscribing his Assent to the 39 articles of ye Church of England in ye following words: Ego, Thom. Dawson, Praeses Collegii Guil: & Mariae in Virginia Librum de Religionis Articulis in quos consensum est ab archi-episcopis and Episcopis utriusque Provinciae, ac reliquo omni Clero, in Synodo Longdinensi Anno Dom. 1562 omnino comprobo; et omnes ac singulos Articulos in eodem contentos (qui trigenta novem citra ratificationem numerantur) Verbo Dei consentaneos esse agnosco. Westmoreland, England, furnished by the eminent antiquarian, the Rev. Charles Best Norcliffe, of Langton Hall, Yorkshire: -- Baptized in Virginia, 1746. June 15. Elizabeth, daughter of the Rev. William Preston. 1748, November 13, Mary, daughter of the Rev. William Preston. 1751, December 14, Priscilla, daughter of the Rev. William Preston. 1745, September 14, was married the Reverend William Preston, M.A., Morality Professor in William and Mary College, Virginia, to Miss Mary Taylor, by the Rev. William Dawson, President of the said College, from whom descended, before his arrival at Warcop Hall, Elizabeth, baptized at the church in Williamsburg, in Virginia, by the Rev. Thomas Dawson, Rector, June the 15th, 1746 O.S.; Mary, baptized in Do by Do November 13, 1748. O.S.; Priscilla, baptized in Do by the Rev. Richard Graham, M.A., Lecturer, Dec. 14, 1751. [According to an after letter of Rev. Mr. Norcliffe, "Mary Taylor" should be "Mary Tyler". - Editor.] Page 127. And then ye Masters administered ye following Oath: In Fidem dabis Te munus Praesidis tibi comissum fideliter administraturum secundum statuta collegii: ita Deus te adjuvet tactis sacrosanctis Xti Evangeliis. Mr. Emanuel Jones, being elected Master of ye Indian School by ye Visitors and Govrs, did also subscribe his assent to ye 39 articles [vid. p. 19] and took ye oath de fideli adminis- tratione, &c. They likewise subscribed to ye three articles in ye 36 canon. Vid. p. 28, 29. [50] Nov. 5, 1755. At a meeting of the President and Masters: Present, Ye Revd Mr Thom: Dawson, President Ye Revd Mr Robinson, Mr Preston, Mr Graham, Mr Camm, Mr Jones. Mr James Hubard is unanimously elected usher of the Grammar School in ye room of Mr Em. Jones. THOMAS DAWSON, President. Jan. 1, 1756.
