Lord Botetourt, when governor, provided two gold medals which were awarded for four years as prizes for the students of William and Mary College. The medal for excellence in mathematics was given in 1772 to Nathanael Burwell, in 1773 to David Stewart, in 1774 to Joseph Eggleston, and in 1775 to John White. The medal for excellence in classics was awarded in 1772 to James Madison afterwards president of the College, in 1773 to Samuel Shield, in 1774 to Walker Maury, and in 1775 to Thomas Evans. Mr. P.
