SCOTT COUNTY, VA - BIOGRAPHIES - Martin B. Wood, 1845-1908 ----¤¤¤---- Wood, Martin Birney (1867) -Martin Birney Wood, Class of 1867 Born- ca. Dec. 1845 or Jan. 1846. He was 17 years and 8 months old when he entered VMI in 1863. Father- James O. Wood; Mother- Ann Elizabeth Godsey. Pat. Grandfather- Henry Wood; Pat. Grandmother- Sally Lawson. Mat. Grandfather- John Godsey; Mat. Grandmother- Julia Jett. Married- 1st- Kate Mildred Dinwiddie, daughter of Joel Dinwiddie and Jane Smithson who's great uncle was William Smithson founder of the Smithsonian Institute at Washington; 2nd- Mrs. Mary A. Williamson Benton, daughter of Thomas Farish Williamson. Children- (From 1st marriage) 1- Mrs. C.D. Caldwell (maiden name unknown); 2- Mrs. Horner Kinsey (maiden name unknown); Henry Clinton Wood, II; 4- (From 2nd marriage) Mary Wood (who died at the age of 2) Entered VMI- Sept. 8, 1863; remained one year; made Honorary Graduate in 1869 Civil War Record- Private in Co. D of 37th Va. Infantry C.S.A; Wounded in Action at Antietam and discharged May 3, 1863 as permanently disabled; He was a member of Co. D of the VMI Corps of Cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market, but was left with guard detail at the Institute because of his old leg wound. Career- Lawyer, Judge of county court of Scott Co.
