Editorial remarks are enclosed in [square brackets]. ________________________________________________ State of Virginia Scott County to wit, This day John Huntsucker personally appeared before me the undersigned justice of the peace in & for the said County of Scott and made oath that Abram Hunsucker was drafted under Captain Henry Read in Burke County State of North Carlina [sic] and served a twelve month in the Revolutionary war. This affiant does not recollect the year, but he saith he does recollect that his service terminated with the Revolutionary war. This affiant understood that the said Abram Hunsucker was under the command of General Morgan "at the Cowpens". This affiant further saith that he understood & believes that the said Abram Hunsucker was in the battle at the Cowpens and afterward in a battle fought at the Eutaw Springs in the State of South Carlina [sic] "under General Samner". Given under my hand this 11th October 1832. James H. Stewart I further certify "that it is proved before me" that the above named John Hunsucker is a credible witness. James H. This affiant saith he was with the said Abram Hunsucker in the battle at the Cowpens and he the said Hunsucker was under the command of General Morgan. Martin Clerk of the County Court of Scott in the State aforesaid, do certify that James H. Stewart who hath signed the preceding affidavits "& certificates" is and acting magistrate in and for the said County of Scott, and that the signatures purporting to be his "are" genuine. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name "there being no seal of office yet procured" this 11th day of October 1832 in the 57th year of the Commonwealth. John S. Martin C.S.C. ________________________________________________ State of Virginia Washington County } SS On the 22d day of October 1832 personally appeared in open court before the justices of Washington county now sitting, Abram Hunsucker called by the soldiers Hunnesuckle, a resident of the said county and State, aged seventy eight years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress, passed June 7, 1832. The said Abram Hunsucker or Hunnesukle states that he was born, as he has been informed by his parents in the year 1754 in Lancaster county Pennsylvania; that his father, when this affiant was very young, first removed to Shenandoah county Virginia, and then into Cumberland county North Carolina, on Deep River. This affiant performed several tours of duty as a malitia [sic] man against the Brittish [sic] and the Indians during the Revolutionary War, previous to the year 1781 but he is now not able to say how long he was in each tour of service. About the first of the year 1781 he served a tour of about three months, and in that time he was under the command of Capt. Clark of the North Carolina militia in the battle of the Cowpens [17 January 1781], Genl. Morgan commanding the American forces. Shortly after returning home it was required that each fifteen militia men should furnish one man for twelve months. This affiant "then of Captain Henry Read's company of militia in Burke county" engaged for that service; was marched to Salisbury & sworn in and placed under the command of Capt. Breward and in the Regiment commanded by Colo. Dixon. From There he was marched and joined Genl. Green at the seige [sic] of Ninety Six [22 May 1781]. From this place after raising the seige he marched with Green to the high hills of Santee. Thence after various marches was with Green in the battle of Eutaw Springs [8 September 1781] being then under the immediate command of Genl. Sumpter. From Eutaw went back to the Santee hills and after various marches was honorably discharged at Camden by Colo. Dixon having served twelve months. This affiant has lost his discharge and has no documentary evidence of his service. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the Agency of any State. Sworn to and subscribed, the day and year aforesaid his Abram - X - Hunsucker mark And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter, and after hearing the affidavits of John Hunsucker and John Smith two credible witnesses that the said applicant was a Revolutionary soldier as he states and served the time set forth in his declaration. I David Campbell clerk of Washington county in the State aforesaid, do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of the said Court in the matter of the application of Abram Hunsucker for a pension. Martin whose name is subscribed to the foregoing certificate is, and was, the Clerk of Scott County at the time of his Attestation thereto. Given under my hand May 16th, 1833. J. Fulton ________________________________________________ State of Virginia Washington County } SS "Personally appeared before me Samuel Hensley a justice of the peace in and for the county aforesaid the foregoing named Abram Hunsucker who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that by reason of the bite of a dog and other infirmities he is unable now to attend at the Courthouse of said county to make the present additional declaration in order to obtain a pension. He therefore on oath declares that there is no clergyman in his neighbourhood" [This entire paragraph is crossed out, but quite readable.] Virginia. At a Court held for Washington county the 24th of June 18__ [torn] On this 24th day of June 1833 came The Rev. Joseph Barker a clergyman residing in the neighbourhood of the above named Abram Hunsucker and being duly sworn doth declare that he believes the said Abram Hunsucker to be seventy eight years of age as he states; that he is reputed and believed in the neighbourhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and that he the said Joseph Barker concurs in that opinion. The said Joseph having been acquainted with the said Abram about thirty years. Joseph Barker And the Court doth certify that the said Joseph Barker is a credible person.
