Jenkins NORTON -- Mr. Henry R. Jenkins, 85, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, in Rapid City, S.D. He was a former resident of Norton and after his retirement moved to Gray, Tenn. Mr. Jenkins was born April 16, 1917, in Glamorgan, Va., the son of Joe Jenkins and Margaret Osborne Jenkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as an infantry machine gunner during World War II. On Dec. 5, 1944, he was wounded in Germany and sent to a hospital in England where he was surprised to learn that his brother, Silas, was in the same hospital also recovering from a wound. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After recovering from his injuries and being discharged from the Army he worked in the coal mining industry in various positions before joining childhood friends, Charlie and Jim Daniels at Daniels Plumbing & Heating Co. of Norton in 1954. He worked there until retiring in 1982. In his retirement Mr. Jenkins enjoyed gardening and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His brothers, Paul and Silas Jenkins; his sister, Nina Shupe; and his granddaughter, Cindy Jenkins, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Estelle Jenkins of Kingsport; daughters, Wanda Greer and Phyllis Clark of Kingsport and Kathy Coats of Rapid City, S.D.; sons, Wayne Jenkins of Pulaski, Va.,. and Dewey Jenkins of Matthews, N.C.; brothers, Norris "Buck" Jenkins and Arthur "Jimmy" Jenkins of Norton and Vernard Jenkins of Baltimore; 24 grandchildren; and 16 great- grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted noon Saturday in the Davis Chapel Church in Norton with Rev. Ronnie Floyd and Dr. Gene Lasley officiating. Burial will be in the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va., where the Charles DeWitt Byrd VFW Post 3382 will conduct military graveside services.
