Hepner Stidley passed away to Glory – July 1, 1966 COPIED OBITUARIES (Note: No dates or Newspaper markings were written on the obituaries) IRVIN BARB, 16 YEAR OLD BOY, DROWNS: Irvin Lynn Barb, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delford Barb, of near Orkney Springs, was drowned in the North Branch of the Shenandoah River about a mile south of Mount Jackson, just above the Toll Gate bridge, at 3:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Young Barb has been swimming in the river with some companions when he met his death. He attempted to swim across the river and back, and went down near the middle of the stream on the return trip. He sank in water 12 feet deep. Calls for help reached Mount Jackson and a group of boys hurried to the scene to aid in recovering the body. It was found and brought to the surface by Graham Stoneburner after it had been (unreadable) approximately 45 minutes. The body was hurried to Harrisonburg Memorial Hospital with the hope that the youth might be resuscitated by means of a pumotor, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Besides his parents, he is survived by several brothers and sisters. Funeral arrangements had not been completed last night. DEATH OF CLARENCE SAGER: Again has the dark shadow of the death angel’s wing passed over our community and another of our brightest and most lovable boys has been called from earth to the better land “beyond the sunset’s radiant glow.” On Sunday morning, Jan. 19, 1913, the spirit of Clarence Jacob Sager quitted its home to put on the robes of immortality after a short life of fifteen years. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. N. Sager, residing about one mile north of Mr. Clifton, Va. He was baptized in infancy, and was well known and beloved by all, especially by those with whom he came in daily contact. For several months he had been a sufferer – unable to lie down for a moment, and in his last hours his sufferings were most intense. His remains were laid to rest in the Powder Springs cemetery on Tuesday, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. J.W. Hausenfluck. The fond parents have the profound sympathy of the entire community in this sore bereavement brought to them by the death of their first born. Yet sadness fills their hearts, for the one they loved so well is no more. The sentiment of their hearts is evidently the same as that of the poet when he wrote the following lines: “All is dark within our dwelling. Lonely are our heats today; For the one we loved so dearly, Has forever passed away.” But God’s promises are full of comfort to such as love and trust him. They point us to a glad reunion in the bright and beautiful beyond. CARD OF THANKS: We return our heartfelt thanks to our neighbors and friends for the assistance given and the sympathy expressed during the sickness, death, and burial of our dear little Ina Frances. All may rest assured their kind acts are appreciated. Parents and Children EDWIN L. COCKRELL DIES – WAS OWNER OF ORKNEY: Edwin L. Cockrell, 69, actively engaged in Washington and nearby Virginia real estate activities for more than 35 years, died at Emergency Hospital Saturday after a brief illness. Mr. Cockrell, who lived at the Clifton Terrace apartments, was also president and owner of the Orkney Springs Hotel at Orkney Springs, Va. Born in Prince William County, Va., Mr. Cockrell lived in Alexandria much of his life. He is survived by his widow Mrs. Elizabeth McKnew Cockrell. The funeral was held Tuesday at the Hines Funeral Home, Washington, with burial in Prince William county. Mr. Cockrell was a frequent Woodstock visitor during the summer seasons, when Orkney is opened for guests, and for a number of years he had been connected with this famous Virginia resort under his ownership and management, many improvements were made at the resort, and the guests at the large hotel came from all over the East. He was especially well and favorably known in the Orkney section of Shenandoah County where news of his death was received with a shock. LACO EARLE STIDLEY DIES: Laco Earle Stidley departed this life at the Garfield Hospital, Washington, D.C., on Thursday evening, April 15, 1937, at the age of 30 years, 4 months, and 15 days. He was born on December 1, 1906, at Orkney Springs, Va., the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R.T. Stidley. He was baptized in infancy and at an early age was confirmed a member of the Lutheran Church by Reverend Copenhaver, remaining a faithful member until death. On September 28, 1931, he and Miss Mary Elizabeth Gilbert, of Pittsburgh, Pa., were united in marriage, and to this union were born two children, one having died in infancy. Surviving are his wife and son John Robert Earle, father and mother, and six sisters – Miss Della Stidley and Mrs. Owen Liskey (Marie) of Harrisonburg, Va.; Mrs. Claude Whissen (Ruth), of Bentonville, Va.; Mrs. Milton Will (Virginia), of near Timberville; and Misses Annabelle and June Stidley at home. A host of other friends throughout Shenandoah County will also mourn the passing of this wholesome young man. Funeral services were held from Powder Springs Lutheran Church on Sunday afternoon conducted by his pastor, the Reverent George A. Stoudemayer, assisted by Rev. M. L. Minnick, of Harrisonburg, and Dr. E.L. Woodward, of Shrine Mont. The esteem in which the deceased young man was held was evidenced by the large attendance and the many beautiful floral tributes at the last rites.
