Mapp Ames was born December 21, 1908 NUMEROUS OBITUARIES WERE IN THE BIBLE: SOME PASTED TO PAGES; MANY SIMPLY DROPPED BETWEEN THE PAGES. Unfortunately the date of the article has not been written on most. All obituaries have been extracted. MALLETTE – On Sunday March 4, 1894, Miss Sarah E. Mallette, adopted daughter of the late Hon. L.H. Chandler, of Norfolk, Va. Services held at the house, 1539 Eighth St. NW, Interment in Norfolk. FLOYD – At the home of Mrs. Mary Sue Mapp at Johnsontown, Va died on Sept. 15th 1897, little Fred, only son of Dr. G.F. Floyd, age 3 yrs. BRUFF – Mrs. Sally Bruff, relict of John W. Bruff, formerly one of the leading merchants of Baltimore, died at the home of her son-in-law, John W. Corbin, Esq. near Pungoteague on Sunday morning. Services held at the home of her son-in- law, W.R. Hallett, Esq. Her remains were carried by the steamer, “Tangier” for interment in Baltimore. She was a Southern Methodist. Aged 67 yrs. she left four children: Mrs. W.R. Hallett & Mrs. J.W. Corbin of this county; and Messurs Joseph and John W. Bruff of Balto. She was born a Floyd of Northampton County; has many relatives on the E.S. of Va. & Md, among whom is Judge Geo. T. Garrison. HENDERSON – Dr. Nathaniel P. Henderson died at his home near Bridgetown on the morning of the 4th. [1895]. Age: 55 years; burial was at the old Henderson homestead, several miles north of Franktown. Educated at Unv of Va. & Pennsylvania Unv. School of Medicine. He served as a surgeon in the Confederate Navy. HALLETT – Wm. R. Hallett died of paralysis at Onancock, Va. on Friday. Aged about 55 yrs. He leaves a widow who is a daughter of the late John W. Bruff. WILSON – Mrs. Mary Wilson, wife of Ernest H. died of typhoid fever on Wed. at 1:30 AM at her home near Birdsnest. She was the eldest daughter of the late Carlton R. Moore. She leaves a husband and three children. Services at Hungars Church and burial in the Churchyard. [d. 28 July, 1897, age 27 yrs, 1 mo., 9 days.] HALLETT – Robert J. Hallett died in Roanoke of pneumonia. Remains were brought to his native county on the steamer “New York”. Leaves only a sister but many relatives and friends. WILKINS – Dr. George F. Wilkins died in Northampton Co. Thurs. night 1st, of paralysis. A graduate of the Unv. of Va. and Jefferson Medical College of Phila. He had not practiced for a number of years due to poor health. Burial in the family plot. [“Sealand”, d. 1 April, 1897] HENDERSON – Mrs. Arthur D. Henderson, Sr. age 62 yrs. died at her home nr Franktown, Wed. morning August 22nd [1934] at 4:00 AM. Burial in the family plot at “Willow Grove”. She was Miss Margaret Mapp, daughter of John Robins & Susan Mapp. A member of Johnson’s Church. Survived by two daughters: Misses Sue and Nannie Henderson of Franktown, one son A.D. Henderson, Jr.; one brother R.J.C. all of Franktown; four sisters: Mrs. Harvey Ames, Mrs. Smith Jacob, Miss Vera Mapp all of Franktown and Mrs. Annie Buchanan of Bird’s Nest, also be seven grandchildren. JACOB – Mrs. Sarah R. Jacob of Norfolk died at her residence, 418 Duncan Ave., Sat. afternoon [27 Jan. 1912]. She was a member of Freemason Baptist Church, Norfolk. Burial in the family plot, “Jacobus”. She is survived by her husband, George R. Jacob and four children: Mrs. Newton Michie of Texas, Clyde H., George R., & R.C. Jacob all of Norfolk. She was the daughter of Mrs. J.C. Dalby of Norfolk who survives her. HEATH – Mr. Louis D. Heath, died suddenly of heart failure at his home in Church Neck on Wed. morning [22 March, 1911]. He was the son of Augustus C. Heath and grandson of Lewis D. Heath, Sr. who in his lifetime was one of Northampton Co’s wealthy and most influential citizens. About 45 yrs. old, he leaves a widow and three children. Burial in Johnson’s Churchyard. GODWIN – Mrs. Mary Julia Upshur Godwin died 12th of June, 1910 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Turlington at Pungoteague, Va. She was born in Norfolk on September 23, 1840. She professed conversion at Johnson’s Methodist Church in 1859 and remained a consistent member the rest of her days. She leaves two daughters and several grandchildren. The obituary was signed D.G.C.B. Franktown, July 20. DENNIS – Arthur E. Dennis, age 38, living in Elliott’s Neck was shot and killed by his Father, Emerson Dennis shortly after midnight [Feb. 23, 1908]. Mr. Emerson Dennis, age 81, was exonerated at the inquest as his actions came from self defence when his son became violent during an argument over business affairs. Arthur Dennis left a widow and one son. TANKARD – Mr. Philip B. Tankard died at his home near Franktown, Saturday 5th [1898] of pneumonia, aged 77 yrs. He was buried at “Tankard’s Rest”, the family burial plot. He leaves a widow and five sons: Dr. Wm., John R., Bernard, George and Edward & two daughters: Mrs. Jno Badger & Mrs. H. Hunt. RICHARDSON – Mrs. George R. Richardson died on Sept. 25th [1909] in the home of his parents after a lingering illness of 15 months, age 51 yrs. He was buried at “Jacobus”, near Johnsontown. Besides his aged parents of Johnsontown, he leaves one brother, L.B. Richardson of Norfolk and two sisters: Mrs. Carl Jacobson of Phila. and Mrs. J.A. Pipkin of Suffolk. LEATHERBURY – Mrs. Virginia Leatherbury, wife of William Leatherbury who died 50 yrs ago. She was 81 yrs old and had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. W.E. Wilkins in Church Neck, Va. A member of Hungars Church. She died on July 13th, 1910. Burial in the family plot at “Woodside”, her son’s residence. She leaves a dau. Mrs. W.E. Wilkins and a son Alonzo Leatherbury. FLOYD – Mrs. Mary Floyd, aged 31 yrs., wife of Dr. G. Fred Floyd died on July 9th, 1895. She was member of the Southern Methodist Church. She leave three little children. TANKARD – Died on May 16th 1892, little Willie, son of Mr. & Mrs. George L. Tankard in this sixth year. Burial in the family grave plot on his Grandfather, Mr. Washington Hunt’s farm. FITZHUGH – Mrs. Georgiana Tankard Fitzhugh, wife of Dr. P.A. Fitzhugh died at 8:30 AM on the 13th of May, 1899. She was the daughter of the late, Dr. George Lyon Eyre Tankard and his wife, Annie Kendall Jacob Tankard. Her father died when she was three yrs. old. Her Grandfather was the late Dr. John Tankard who was a surgeon in Lafayette’s division of the American army during the Revolution. She was born at the family home, “Sylvan Scene” on the 7th of March, 1826; married Dr. P.A. Fitzhugh of Middlesex Co., VA. on the 17th of April, 1849. She leaves a husband, a daughter, Mrs. Wm. Bullitt Fitzhugh and a son-in-law. Burial at “Sylvan Scene”. PARKER – Mr. Alfred Parker died Tuesday morning, Sept. 14th, 1897 at “Elkington”. He was the youngest son of Dr. Jacob and Mrs. Nancy Park and was ages 83 yrs. He leaves an only sister, Mrs. Sarah Upshur. Burial in the family graveyard at “Elkington”. KELLAM – Mrs. Lucy Wilmina Kellam died at her home “Shadyside” on Jan 30th, 1898. She was born on Oct. 29, 1859 in Northampton Co. She is survived by her husband D.C. Kellam and three daughters. FITZHUGH – Dr. P.A. Fitzhugh died Tuesday, July 7th, 1908 at 4:50 PM at his home “Sylvan Scene”, aged 74 yrs and 23 days. He was the son of Philip Fitzhugh and his wife Mary Macon Aylett and was born at “Shooter’s Hill” the old Fitzhugh homestead in Middlesex Co., Va. on June 14th, 1824. He was a descendant in the tenth generation on Col. Wm. Fitzhugh of Bedford, England. His maternal Grandmother was Elizabeth Aylett, third daughter of Patrick Henry, the distinguished orator and statesman. He leaves an only child, Mary Canon Aylett, wife of Wm. Bullitt Fitzhugh, now of Kansas City. Burial at “Sylvan Scene”. FITZHUGH – Mrs. Ann Eliza Henry Fitzhugh, widow of the late Col. Lafayette Henry Fitzhugh. She was a Kentuckian, having been born in Louisville on the 29th of March, 1831, the daughter of John C. Bullitt. She died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Samuel H. Milliken of Dallas, TX. Besides her daughter, she is survived by two sons: Lafayette Henry Fitzhugh, a lawyer in Dallas and Col. William Bullitt Fitzhugh of “Sylvan Scene”, Northampton Co., Va. (no dates) WHITE – Judge E.J. White died in St. Louis, MO (no dates). He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. James H. White of Northampton Co., Va; brother of Sidney and Mary Ann White of Franktown and John M. White of St. Louis and a near relative of the Hon. S.S. Wilkins. He married Miss Bissell of St. Louis. ---Cape Charles Pioneer. His loving brother and sister had been planning happy festivities for the visit which Judge White could not make. They lived at “Grapeland” The aged mother, stricken with grief was brought home from the west by Mrs. Nealie White and Mrs. John M. White hoping that her native Climate would revive her. However, just three weeks after the death of her son, Mrs. Annie E. White died. She was buried at “Mahogany Grove” in her native county. Her son had been buried in “that lovely spot”, “Bellefontaine” in St. Louis. ----The last part of this unusual obituary is signed “M.O.B. “HollyBrook” Northampton Co., Va June 2, 1891
