Mohler has taught in the Public Schools of Ashby District, Shenandoah County, Virginia, from their inception until the spring of 1883. He ranks high as a teacher here, and for qualifications, general good character, a special gift to impart instructions and a tact to gain the good will of his pupils has few superiors. I have no hesitancy in recommending him. H.H. Coffman Clerk, Public Schools Ashby District (Attached to Mohler Bible Records) FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM – MORNING SAN SABA MADSTONE USED TO TREAT DOG, INSECT BITES San Saba, April 23. – Revelation of the “madstone” owned by a Weatherford man as reported in Sunday’s Star-Telegram brought to light a “madstone” owned by Mrs. Bill Linn of San Saba, who found the stone in the bottom of a trunk where she has kept it since she was a child. The “madstone” was brought to Texas from Virginia by Mrs. Linn’s grandfather, Captain J.A. Mohler, who gave it to his son-in-law, the late W. H. Oglesby of Mills County, who was Mrs. Linn’s father. Measuring one and one-half inches by seven-eights of an inch, the “madstone” owned by Mrs. Linn has been used on horses as well as people. A race horse that had been bitten by a mad dong was brought several miles to be treated by the “madstone” when it was kept in Mills County. The stone is light brown and is of porous construction, coming from a deer’s stomach. Besides rabies infection, the Oglesby family used the stone to alleviate pain when any of the children received bites from ants, bees or other insects. Instructions for use call for boiling the stone in water or preferably sweet milk and applying it to the wound. The porosity of the stone together with the moisture in it, cause it to adhere to the flesh and inferentially, to draw the poison therefrom. Captain Mohler was an officer in the confederate Army and the stone was given to him while he was in Virginia, his native State. He was a classmate of John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. (Attached to Mohler Bible Records) Samuel Mohler was born in 1810 in Virginia and was the son of Martin Mohler. His wife Ellenor Allington was born in Virginia in 1814 and was the daughter of Jacob Allington. Samuel and Ellenor were married 8 March 1832 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Captain J.A. Mohler was the brother of William Anderson Mohler. He was not a classmate of John Wilkes Booth. Captain Mohler was a photographer by trade, and the story most likely true is that he photographed in his studio John Wilkes Booth before Booth assassinated the President. The family of Captain Mohler say that after Booth’s notoriety, Captain Mohler developed the negative and the resulting photo was kept in the family for years, but has now disappeared. Millard Clyde Mohler was born in Mills County, Texas, the only one of the children of William Anderson Mohler to be born in Texas. He married 4 January 1904 in Gatesville, Texas, Carrie Ann Davis, born 8 May 1885, the daughter of Gilford Calloway Davis and his wife Harriet Olive Bourland. Clyde died 27 March 1967 in Houston, Texas; Carrier died 16 March 1942 in Gatesville, Texas; both are buried in Levita Cemetery, Coryell County, Texas. Bobbie Mohler Thornston Plano, Texas
