A HISTORY OF SHENANDOAH COUNTY. Page 698 Foltz Notes The land, 265 acres, of the old Foltz place on Swover Creek was deeded to Ulrich Waggoner, June 25, 1778 by Adam Raider, executor of Adam Raider, dec'd, for 120 pounds. the deed was evidently written by Jacob Rinker, Jr. one of the subscribing witnesses. Abm. Bird and Frederick Woolford were the other witnesses. Rader and Woolford signed in German. James C. Foltz is a son of Robert, who was a son or grandson of Joshua. Joshua probably succeeded Waggoner in possession of this land. NOTE: Richard L. Tisinger comments on the above: Jacob Raider Jr. lived on west side of Cabin Hill at the head of Swover Creek. James C. Foltz is James Calvin Foltz, grandson of Joshua Jr., and James Calvin did succeed Waggoner in possession of this land. NOTE: On July 3, 1994 Tim and Jane Hodgson visited the area where this land was located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It was raining very hard and the picture is taken through the windshield wipers of the car. __________________________________________________________________ ZION PINE CHURCH On February 22, 1788 the Rev. Willy was accepted as the Reformed preacher of Zion Pine Church. On that date he also began the Reformed church register in which he noted that his appointment was approved by the church council which consisted then of the following deacons: Ulrich Wagner Georg Rincker Johann Keller Jacob Gaufeld Exactly four months later, on June 22, 1788, Willy and Deschler officiated at the joint dedication service of the new church an der Schwaben (Swover creek). The schoolmaster, Michael Ruppert, led the congregational singing which included a hymn which Pastor Willy had specially written for the occasion. Swover Creek was then also known as Liberty Creek but the old desination of the creek of the Swabians has prevailed to this day in an area where the German dialect has become nearly extinct only in our days. Swabians, Swiss and Palatines were the original settlers of the section. _________________________________________________________________ WILL WILL BOOK E PAGE 431 ULRICK WAGGONER, Shenandoah County.
