D. #2 My dear Madam:- In examining the official Confederate war records relative to your claim for pension, as the widow of a Confederate soldier, we find that your husband, Valentine Russell, enlisted in April 1868, and was reported present on the roll for November and December of the same year. No other record is found of his service on subsequent rolls of his company. We, therefore, want to know what happened to him at that time, and whether or not he left the army, and if so, under what circunstances, before the end of the war. It may be that the comrades who endorsed your application, ____ Bowers, and __ Lemuel Grandstaff, can give you information concerning this record, in the way of a sworn statement, if so, please let us have it by early mail, if not, any information from reliable sources, giving the information herein requested will help your claim.
