Shenandoah herald. (Woodstock, Va.) 1865-1974: July 01, 1869
We are pained to announce the death of our esteemed citizen, Major John Koontz,
which took place at his residence about three miles west of this place, on Friday
last. He had become overheated, and before he could reach his house was overcome by
violent hemorrhage. His family were summoned to him, but in a very short time his
spirit took its flight. Thus has passed away, one of our most highly esteemed
citizens, for few men enjoyed to so high a degree the confidence and respect of the
community in which he lived. His was indeed an example of business and moral
rectitude which the young of the present day might profitably follow. His age was
seventy five years and eight months. His body was interred at the burying ground at
Mt. Jackson, on Sunday last. Requiescat in pace.
