Rosenberger Accident. Mt. Jackson, March 22, 1869.
Mr. Editor: This community was thrown into the most painful and intense excitement
on Friday last, by the most shocking accident that has ever occurred in our village.
About 10 o’clock, Isaac Rosenberger, aged 23 years, son of Mr. John Rosenberger, of
this place, walked into Messrs. Witz & Bro's, store, with a friend to purchase
ammunition, &c., for a bird hunt. After making the purchase he appears to have
intended loading his gun, one barrel being already loaded. He removed the cap from
the tube and cocked it; he then placed the breech upon the floor, and was,
apparently, in the act of blowing into one of the barrels to ascertain whether it
was loaded or not, when the gun was, from some unaccountable cause discharged, the
contents taking effect in the front of his head and forehead, completely blowing the
whole front of his head away, and scattering his brains in every direction. He was
removed to his father’s residence, just opposite, where he died in about two hours
after. 
Young Rosenberger was, until the day previous to this accident, for some time
engaged as a brakeman on the Railroad, and had left the road because of the danger
incident to that position. He leaves a widow of seventeen, to whom he was married
some few weeks ago. This terrible accident should be another warning to those who
use firearms carelessly, and adds another to the fearful list chronicled every day.
