Hawthorne, 72, of Naples, Fla., died at his home on Dec. 21, 2004. He was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Havaco (McDowell County), W.Va. He was a ninth generation descendant of James Hawthorne from Washington County. He served 20 years in United States Air Force, retiring in 1971 with the rank of Master Sergeant Special Agent. He received 23 awards and medals including the Bronze Star during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a graduate of Welch High School, Normandale Community College with honors, University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a certificate of Criminal Justice. He was involved in writing the genealogy and doing extensive research on the James Hawthorne family. He compiled The Hawthorne Family History Book. Survivors include his wife, Barbara K. Hawthorne; one son and daughter-in-law, Sean Michael and Laurie Hawthorne of Edina, Minn.; grandchildren, Kylie, Zoe and Patrick Hawthorne; and several cousins in the area. A celebration of his life was held Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, in Naples, Fla. Williams Funeral Home in Chilhowie was in charge of arrangements.
