McKinney MARION -- Ira Marlowe "Mac" McKinney, 75, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002 in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was born to the late Fred and Nanna Safewright McKinney and was preceded in death by his brothers, Fred McKinney and Millard McKinney; and his sisters, Velma Sexton, Elsie Haggar, Ella Roberts, Mary Miller and Rosa McKinney. He was a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Army having served in World War II, the Korean conflict and Vietnam. He was the recipient of many medals of valor to include four Purple Hearts, three Presidential Citations, Bronze Star and Silver Star. He was an Army recruiter in Richlands in 1960-65 and graduated from Wytheville Community College in 1974. He was a member of the Francis Marion V.F.W. 4667. He retired from the Army in 1971 and became a farmer in Smyth County. Survivors include wife of 50 years, Maxine Thompson McKinney; one daughter, Debbie McKinney, Marion; one son and daughter-in-law, Major Johnny and Faye McKinney, Iowa City, Iowa; four sisters, Iris Rich, Galax, Stella Cox, Rural Retreat, Naomi King, Wytheville, and Mozelle Eversole, Wytheville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dickie and Genny McKinney, Nokesville, Va., and Jean and Glenna McKinney Powell, Wyo.; step-grandchildren, Ronnie Ray, Lisa Gilliam and Sandy Roy; special friends, Clement Osborne, C.D. Stickley and Bill Musser; several nieces and nephews; and many friends also survive. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the West Cemetery with full military honors being rendered by the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667. Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the McKinney Family.
