He was a life long resident of Damascus and was the son of late William McKinley Steele and Holly Lee Morefield Steele. He was a member of the Damascus United Methodist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a retired Sheriff’s Deputy from Washington County Sheriff’s Department, a past Bailiff of Washington County Court System, a member of the Damascus Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge No. 104, a member of the American Legion Post No. 135, a past vice-chairman of Washington County Park Authority, past player-agent for Damascus Little League Baseball for 15 years, instructor at Southwest Policy Academy of Bristol, a member of the Zoning and Appeals Committee in Damascus, an active member of the Holston High School Booster Club for several years, and a life long supporter of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Keri Steele and R.C. Sheets of Glade Spring; one son, Robert W. “Rob” Steele, of San Francisco, Calif.; one sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Danny Sutter of Johnson City, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Makenzie Carson Sheets; one grandson, Brycen Steele Sheets; three nieces, Jennifer Bates and husband, Gary, Dana Brown and husband, Jim Bob and Holly Sutter. Funeral services were conducted Thursday evening, Dec. 30, 2004, in the Damascus United Methodist Church. The Rev. Helen Phillips officiated the ceremony. The committal service and interment was held Friday morning, Dec. 31, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Park. Graveside rites were conducted by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 426, Damascus, Va. 24236 or to the Damascus Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. The family received friends Thursday evening, Dec. 30, 2004, prior to the funeral service at Damascus United Methodist Church in Damascus.
