Genealogical Editor, Times-Dispatch: Dear Sir,- In The Times-Dispatch (1907) article, "Turner Family (No. 239*)," there occurs this statement: "From the Northern family was James Turner, one of the earliest settlers in Maryland, and from him were the Turners ot Southampton, Va., one of whom, also James, born December 20, 1766. moved to North Carolina about 1800 and became Governor of the State." Cannot you or some of your readers trace Governor James Turner's line back through James, of Maryland, to the New England immigrant? I am anxious to get in communication with some one who is versed in this Turner history. My ancestor, John Turner, died in Greenesville [sic] county, Va, 1797. His father, according to family tradition, was Simon. Governor Turner's father, Thomas, was believed to be also a son of Simon. There is a will of one Simon Turner, of Southampton county, 1762, in which he mentions his sons, Simon, William, Arthur, Thomas and John. Light on this subject is much desired. Yours truly, GRANVILLE GOODLOE. Arkadelphia, Ark. TURNER family, "Times-Dispatch" (Richmond, VA), No. 18,325, July 24, 1910, p. 43, col. 7 online as part of the Library of Virginia's Virginia Chronicle newspaper database, at: https://virginiachronicle.com/ *Article No. 239 would actually have appeared in the issue of May 3, 1908 (No. 17914); however, that the scans of that issue are missing at least one section - there's no Genealogical Column, no Confederate Column, no Buster Brown. Simon TURNER left will dated 7 Jul 1761, proved 10 Dec 1762 (WB1:410-14); file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/wills/t656s1wl.txt Find a Grave Mem. #23466483 for Gov. James William Turner gives b. 20 Dec 1766, Southampton Co., VA, sn/o Francis Turner (1740-1804) & Elizabeth (Gilley) Turner (1750-1817)*; family moved to Warren Co., NC, 1770; NC Militia, 1780; NC House of Commons, 1799-1800; NC Senate, 1801-02; chosen to replace governor elect John B. Ashe (d. 1802); chosen governor, sworn in 5 Dec 1802, served 3 one-year terms; named to US Senate; resigned, 1816; d. 15 Jan 1824, Warren Co., NC; bu. "Bloomsbury" plantation, Warren Co., NC; also owned "Oakland," in [what later became] Vance Co., NC. *However, that Francis Turner left will in Patrick Co., VA, Oct 1804, and his son is likely not identical with Gov. Turner. The error is repeated in several Ancestry.com family trees, while others are even more creative. The other facts are taken from Wikipedia, which includes a portrait & a silhouette; article at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Turner_(North_Carolina_politician) NCpedia gives some different details: b. that portion of Bute Co. which later later became Warren Co., NC; sn/o farmer Thomas Turner, who had lived in Granville Co. since at least 1754 {Granville Co. formed Bute Co. 1764}; "Bloomsbury" was near Warrenton, "Oakland" near Williamsboro; article which includes a framed silk silhouette; "Dictionary of North Carolina Biogragraphy," at: https://www.ncpedia.org/biography/turner-james Research Branch, NC Office of Archives and History, 2004, at: https://www.ncpedia.org/turner-james-research-branch-nc-oah Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by File Manager Matt Harris (zoobug64@aol.com). file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/bios/t656fam1.txt
