GRIZZARD, pardon, 19 Nov 1894 (1896) killed registrar Copeland BARDEN [BARTON], 28 Oct 1893; convicted of murder in the second degree, Southampton Co. court, Jun 1894; sentenced to ten years imprisonment ABSOLUTE PARDONS Transmitted to the General Assembly by Charles T. O'Ferrall, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia January 1, 1896 printed in: JOURNAL OF THE SENATE OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA Wednesday, December 4, 1895 Senate Doc. No. 4, p. 8 & JOURNAL OF THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES OF THE STATE OF VIRGINIA FOR THE SESSION OF 1895-96 House Doc. No. 2, p. 9 (both sources' identical text) C. P. Grizzard. Convicted in the Southampton county court, June, 1894, of murder in the second degree, and sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary. Pardoned November 19th, 1894. The provocation in this case was very great, and in my opinion the act was committed when the prisoner had every reason to fear serious bodily harm. He had borne a good character. In the opinion of a large number of citizens in Southampton, the punishment fixed by the jury was very excessive. They recommend his pardon, and the judge, commonwealth's attorney, sheriff, clerk, and committing justice, do likewise. Additional information: The murder was reported in at least 3 newspapers - "Alexandria (VA) Gazette," Oct. 31, 1893, p. 2, col. 3; "The Richmond (VA) Dispatch," Nov. 1, 1893, p. 4, col. 2; "The Roanoke (VA) Times," Nov. 1, 1893, p. 1, col. 6 Transcriptions of the articles are posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/news/11011893ag.txt It is unclear if the assailant is identical with Cader Price GRIZZARD, whose obit ("Tidewater News," Jan. 28, 1921, p. 1) is posted at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/obits/g626c2ob.txt Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by Allen Story, and re-formatted by File Manager. file at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/southampton/court/g626c2pd.txt
