All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Hugh Basden & wife Mary to John Matthews Deed of Bargain & Sale, 8 Jul 1756 [margin note] Basden to Matthews This Indenture made this eighth Day of July in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & fifty six Between Hugh Basden of Southampton County of the one Part & John Matthews of the same County of the other Part Witnesseth that the said Hugh Basden for and In consideration of the Sum of Seven Pounds ten Shillings Current Money of Virginia to him in hand paid the Receipt whereof the said Hugh Basden doth hereby Confess and acknowledge hath Bargained & sold & doth by these Presents bargain and sell unto the said John Matthews one Certain Tract or Parcel of Land lying & being in the County of aforesaid in Nottoway Parish on the South side of Seacock Swamp & bounded as followeth Beginning at a pine a marked tree standing in the head of the deep branch between the said Hugh Basden and Thomas Jones then by that Line to a pine by a Branch between the said Hugh Basden & John Matthews from thence to a mark'd tree a Corner between the said Hugh Basden & Robert Johnson a black oak then by the said Johnson's to to [sic] Thomas Jones's lines and so to the first Begining the said Land Containing by Estimation one hundred and twenty five Acres be the same more or less also the Reversion and Reversions Remainder and Remainders To have and to hold the said Land & Tenements and Hereditaments with ["the" struck] all appurtenances unto the said John Matthews & his Heirs forever to the only use & behoof the said John Matthews his Heirs forever and the said Hugh Basden his Heirs & Assigns the above granted Lands with the Appurtenances unto the John Matthews his Heirs & Assigns against him the said Hugh Basden & against all & every Person & Persons Whatsoever shall & will forever Warrant and Defend by these Presents & that he the said Hugh Basden hath a good Right and Lawful Authority in the Law to grant bargain sell & Convey the said Lands and Tenements with the Appurtenances unto the said John Matthews & his Heirs forever According to the true intent & meaning of these Presents Witness whereof the said Hugh Basden hath hereunto Set his Hand and Seal this Eighth Day of July 1756 his Hugh HB Basden /LS/ Sealed Signed & Delivered} Mark in the Presence of us ~ } [no witnesses given] } Memorandum that on this eighth Day of July 1756 Peaceable & Quiet Possession of the above said Land Messuage & other Premises in the said Deed Contained was Delivered to John Matthews by the above Named Hugh Basden According to the Form & Effect of this Deed In Presence of Hugh Basdens HB [no witnesses given] Mark At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 8th Day of July 1756 This Indenture and Memorandum were Acknowledged by the above named Hugh Basden & Ordered to be Recorded and Mary the Wife of the said Hugh Basden Personally Appeared in Court & being first Privily examined as the Law directs Voluntarily relinquished her Right of Dower in the Estate Conveyed hereby Test [check mark] Examined R Kello Cl [page continues with deed from Arthur TAYLOR of Edgcomb Co., NC, to Harris TAYLOR of Southampton, dated 16 Jul 1756.] [Order Book 1754-59, pp. 247, 251, 253] This Indenture and Memorandum were Acknowledged by the above named Hugh Basden & Ordered to be Recorded and Mary the Wife of the said Hugh Basden Personally Appeared in Court & being first Privily examined as the Law directs Voluntarily relinquished her Right of Dower in the Estate Conveyed hereby At a Court held for the county of Southampton on thursday the 8 day of July 1756.
