All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Deeds James STANTON, deed of emancipation (of eight slaves), 13 Aug 1782 (14 Nov 1782) [margin notes] James Stanton Man.s I James Stanton of Southampton County Virginia being Fully pursuaded that Freedom is the natural right of all mankind And that it is my duty to do unto others as I wou'd be done by in the Like situation; and having under my care one Negro Whom I have heretofore held as a slave of the following Name & Age Viz:t Nanny aged About 33 Years; I hereby Emancipate and set free the above named slave, & I do for my self my heirs ~ Executors & Administrators, relinquish all my right Title Inter =est & Claim orpretension of Claim Whatsoever either to her person or to any estate she may hereafter acquire - and having also seven negroes now in Their Minority, of the following names And ages Vizt. Lucey aged about sixteen years Siah aged about 14 Years, Tom aged about 12 Years, Sam Aged about 9 Years, Moses Aged about 7 Years, Davey aged about 4 Years Kate aged about 2 Years, all and every one of which I also hereby emancipate & set free, yet I believe it right for me to reserve the prerogative of Acting as Guardian over them untill the males arrive to the age of twenty one and the feemales to the age of eighteen years, and I do for myself my heirs Executors &Adm'ors. Relinquish all My right Title Interest & Claim orpretension of claim what so [page break] [p.] (87) =soever either to their persons, or to any Estate They may acquire after they shall attain to the ages abovesaid which will be at the Following times Viz.t Lucey on the 18.th Day of the 12.th month 1783, Siah on the 7.th Day of the 4.th Month in the year 1786, Tom on the 3.rd Day of the Eighth month 1791, Sam on the 15.th day of the first month 1794, Moses on the 22.nd Day of the eighth month - 1796. Davey on the 30.th of the fifth Month 1799.
