All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Deeds William BUTLER, deed of emancipation (of seven slaves), 8 Oct 1782 (14 Nov 1782) [margin notes] William Butlers Eman.s I William Butler of Southampton County Virginia being fully pursuaded that freedom is the nat =ural right of all mankind and that it is my duty to do [to] others As I would Desire to be doneby in the like situation and having under my care four Negroes whom I have heretofore held as Slaves of the following names and ages Viz:t Phillis aged about Thirty one years Ned aged about 27 Years Jinney aged about Twenty five years, ___ Jimmey aged about twenty three years, I hereby emancipate and free the above named slaves and I do for myself my heirs Executors & Adm'ors relinquish [page break] [p.] (90) All my right Title Interest and Claim or pretention of claim Whatsoever Either to their persons or to any estate They may here =after acquire ____ And haveing also Three Negroes now in their Minority of the following names &ages Viz.t Sam aged about Thirteen Years,- Billey aged about six Years, Linder aged about Four Years _ all & Every one of Which I also hereby emancipate & set free,_ yet I believe it right for me to reserve the prerogative of acting as Guardian over them untill the males arrive to the age of Twenty one years - And the fee males to the age of eighteen Years And I do for my self my heirs Executors and Administrators Relinquish all my right Title Interest & Claim or pretentions of Claim Whatsoever, either to their persons or to any estate They may acquire after they shall attain to the ages above said, whi =ch will be at the following Time .viz:t Sam in the year 1790.- Billey in the year 1797 Linder in the year 1796: Then to enjoy their full Freedom Without Any interruption from me or any person Claiming for by from or under me In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand &Seal This eighth Day of the Tenth Month in the Year of our Lord one Thousand seven Hundr =ed and Eighty Two _____ Signed Sealed & Delivered} William Butlar ¤LS¤ In the Presence of _ _ _} Sampson Stanton} Richard Wrenn } ¯¯¯ At a Court Held for Southampton County the 14.th Day of November 1782 This Emancipation Was proved by the affirmation of Sampson Stanton and Richard Wrenn the Witnesses Thereto &ordered to be Recorded Teste Sam Kello :Cl:Cou: ~-~^~-~ [page & entry end] Southampton Co., VA, Deed Book 6 (1782-1787), pp. 89-90 The Library of Virginia (LVA), Richmond, VA LVA, Southampton Co.
