I  Thomas Pretlow Sen.r of Southampton  County in 
Virginia, haveing under my care anumber of Negroes which I 
have set free about nine years since, and have acted as guard 
=ian to them to keep them from being sold at publick sale which 
The law required; But lateley the legislature of this state has 
been pleased to make an act To Tolerate the &those that have a 
mind to set them free ___ I do now in the aforesaid County Court 
publickly Declare them so. Whose names &ages are as follows 
Viz:t Sarah 66 Years old last first month called January,___ 
Sam Diggs 65 Years the 21.st Day of last sixth Month __ John 
Homes 52 Years the 26.th of last fifth Month __ Dick freem 
=an 49 Years the 4.th of last second month _ Charles Hill 40 
years the 23.rd of last Eleventh month ___ Daniel Jeffray 40 
Years the 28.th of last third month __ William Mingo 37 Years 
the 17.th of last first month _ Fanny Diggs 37 Years the 20.th 
of last first month ___ Nanny Green 35. years the 7.th of 
last sixth month __ James Green 28 Years __ Hannah Green

Thomas Pretlow produced an instrument of writing under his hand and seal 
emancipating the following slaves  to wit:  Sarah  Sam Diggs, John Homes, Dick 
Freeman  Charles Hill, Daniel Jeffray, William Mingo, Fanny Diggs, Nanny Green, 
James Green, Hannah Green, Silvia Diggs, Patty Diggs, Sam Diggs, Joseph Diggs, 
Ellik Green, Celah Green, George Diggs & Charlotte Diggs . which was acknowledged 
by the said Thomas Pretlow and ordered to be recorded.

Additioanl information: 

There is no record of PRETLOW's emancipation of his slaves circa 1773, 
in the Southampton Co. Deed Books or Court Orders for the period. 

Thomas PRETLOW, will dated 21 Apr 1786, proved 14 Jun 1787
