All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Deeds Elizabeth ELEY, deed of emancipation (of four slaves), 8 Sep 1782 (14 Nov 1782) [margin notes] [p.] (92) Elizabeth Eley s Eman.s I Elizabeth Eley of Southampton County in Virginia haveing under my Care a negro woman named Rose, aged Thirty seven years whom I have heretofore held as a Slave, but being fully purs =uaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind _ & that it is my duty to do to others as I wou'd be done by, do Therefore hereby Emancipate and set her the said Rose free, and I do for myself my heirs Executors & Adm'ors: relinquish all my right Title Interest & Claim orpretention of claim whatsoever either to her persons or to any Estate She may hereafter acquire, & haveing also Three who are now in their minority :Viz.t David a Boy born the tenth Day of the fifth Month 1778. Venus a Girl Born the first Day of the fourth month 1769, and Judah a Girl born the first Day of the fourth month 1771; whom I like =wise emancipate &Set free, Yet I think it right for me to have the care & Direction of the said David untill he shall attain to the age of Twenty one Years, & of the said Venus & Judah Till they shall attain to the age of Eighteen Years __ and I do for my self my heirs Executors & Adm'ors: Relinquish all my right Title Interest & Claim orpretention of Claim, what =soever Either to their person or to any Estate they may acquire after they shall arrive to the full &Lawfull ages aforesaid ~ All the abovesaid Negroes and Their posterity to Enjoy their Full Freedom without any Interruption from me or any person Claiming for by or under me In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this 8.th Day of the ninth month in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty two ~ Sealed & Delivered } Elizabeth Eley ¤LS¤ In the presence of_} Thomas Ricks } Jordan Denson } Lemuel Jones_ _} ¯¯¯ [page break] [p.] (93) At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 14.th Day of November 1782 This deed was proved by the affirmation of Thomas Ricks & Jordan Denson two of the witnesses Thereto & Ordered to be Recorded ~ Teste ~ [entry end] Southampton Co., VA, Deed Book 6 (1782-1787), pp. 92-93 The Library of Virginia (LVA), Richmond, VA LVA, Southampton Co.
