County Virginia Haveing under my care two Negroes to wit: Jack anegro man aged About Twenty five years, and Sarah Negro woman aged about Twenty eight years whom I have heretofore Held as Slaves but Being fully pursuaded that Freedom is the natural right of all mankind & That it is my Duty to do by others, as I wou'd they shou'd by me, Do therefore, hereby emancipate and set thesaid Jack and Sarah free,__ and I do for myself My heirs Executors & Administrators Relinquish all my right Title Interest and Claim or pretention of Claim Whatsoever Either to their persons or to any estate they may hereafter Acquire, ___ And haveing also one now In her Minority Viz.t China anegro girl about ten years of age, whom I likewise emancipate and Set free Yet I believe it right for me to have the Care & Direction of the Said China untill she shall attain to the age of eighteen Years, and I do for my self my heirs Ex'ors. & Adm'ors. relinquish all my right Title Interest and Claim orpreten Microfilm Reel 27 Additional information: Their father Robert RICKS (Sr.) left will 25 Jul 1764, proved 12 Oct 1764, leaving a slave to each of his seven children (with more to be distributed after the the death of his wife. (Southampton Co. WB2:103-06) His estate was appraised 11 Oct 1764, returned 12 Jul 1770. (Southampton Co.
