All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Deeds David BARROW, deed of emancipation (of two slaves), 10 Feb 1784 (11 Mar 1784) ________________________________________________________________ ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ [margin notes] Barrow } to } Ben &.c} Manum.n - " - Southampton County Virginia Whereas an act of General Assembly Intitled an act Concerning the manumission of Slaves, gives free liberty to all Persons holding slaves under Certain Restrictions to manumit or set them free _ Therefore be it known to all whom it may Concern that I David Barrow of the County and State Aforesaid being duely [sic] Sensible and fully pursuaded that freedom is the Natural and Unalienable right of all Mankind; and also having a Single eye to that Golden Rule prescribed in Sacred Writ Viz.t "do to all Men as ye would they should Do to you" Do hereby Agreeable to the above recited Act Manumit or set free the Slaves now in my Possession (to wit) a Negro Man Named Ben Blackhead, of about twenty three years of age, and a Negro Woman named Lucrcia Blackhead of about Eighteen and I do freely and Voluntarily from a Sacred regard, that I have yo the rights of Mankind Acknowledge & declare them the Above named Negroes to be free Citizens of the State disclaiming all Right and Title to them or their Decendants [sic] or any thing hereafter lawfully by them Possessed whatsoever In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & Seal this 10.th day of February 1784.
