All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Deeds Thomas RICKS, deed of emancipation (of two slaves), 10 Feb 1785 [margin notes] Ricks } to } Jacob &.c} Emanci: } I Thomas Ricks of Southampton County Virginia haveing [sic] under my Care a Negro boy named Jacob Aged Twenty Years the Eleventh Day June next Ensueing also a negro Girl named Judy Aged three Years the first day of December Next Ensueing but being fully pursuaded that freedom is the natural right of all mankind and that it is my duty to do to Others as I wou'd be done by do therefore hereby Emancipate and set the said Negroes free Yet reserve the Care & Direction of them to my self my heirs Executors or Administrators, untill they ["sall" struck] shall Arrive to Lawfull age and I do for myself my heirs Ex'ors: & Adm'ors: Relinquish all my right title Interest and Claim or pretention of claim Whatsoever either to their person or to any Estate they may Acquire after they arrive to the full &Lawfull age Aforesaid, then to enjoy their full freedom without any Interruption from me or from any person claiming for by or under me In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand [&] Seal this 10.th Day of February in the year of our Lord 1785. ~ Thomas Ricks ¤Seal¤ At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 10.th day of February 1785.
