All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Deeds John JOHNSON & wife Celah (Selah) to Hardy POPE, deed of bargain & sale, 320a., 9 Jun 1785 This Indenture Made this ninth day of June in the Year of our lord Christ One thousand seven hundred and eighty five Between, John Johnson and Selah his wife of the County of (So.ampton) [page break] [p.] (422) Southampton and parish of Nottoway, of the One part and Hardy Pope of the County of Southampton & Parish of Nottoway of the Other part, Witnesseth that the said John Johnson for and In Consideration of the sum of Four hundred pounds Current Money to him in hand paid by the said Hardy pope, the Receipt whereof he doth hereby Acknowledge, Hath Granted bargained sold, aliened, released & Confirmed, and by these presents Doth Grant, Bargain sell alien. release, and Confirm unto the said Hardy Pope, and to his heirs & Assigns. All that tract and parcel of land & premises, with the Appurtenances, situate Lying & being in the aforesaid Parish of Nottoway and County of Southampton on Nottoway River and on the South side thereof Containing three hundred and twenty Acres be the same more or less. and bounded According to the known Established and Reputed Bounds thereof, One hundred & twenty acres part of the said tract Was given & Devised by the last Will & Testament of Samuel Woodward Deceased bearing Date the 5th. Day of March One thousand seven hundred and fifty two To Henry Johnson, Father of the said John Johnson, which said Will is duly proved & recorded in the Court of the said County of Southampton, Two hundred acres other part thereof was purchased, by the said Johnson of one Jacob Johnson by Indenture bearing date the 11th. day of August One thousand seven hundred & fifty seven, and by the Death of the said Henry, the said Land [&] premises, have Descended & come to the said John Johnson as his eldest son and Heir, & also Including in the said premises a sein' or fishing place upon Nottoway River, opposite to a Place Called the Great Oak bay which was formerly held Occupied & used, as such by Virtue of a Deed from Sam.l [page break] [p.] (423) Samuel Woodward to Thomas Jarrell but the [same] is by several Conveyances now become Vested in the said John Johnson And all houses, out houses edifices buildings, Yards, Gardens, Orch_ =ards trees Ways, waters, Water Courses, Profits Commodities hereditaments And Appurtenances, to the said Tract or parcel of land, belonging or in any wise appertaining, and the reversion and reversions, remainder and remainders, rents, issues, and profits thereof, and all the Estate right title & Interest use trust Possession property Claim & Demand Whatsoever of him the said John Johnson and Celah his. Wife of in & to the same, and every part thereof & all deeds evidences and writings touching or in any wise Concerning the same To have and to hold, the said planta= =tion tract or parcel of Land & Premises, with the appurten =ances unto the said Hardy Pope his heirs & Assigns, ___ To the only proper use of the sd.
