Day of December in the year of our lord Christ one Thousand seven hundred and eighty four Between Arthur Whitehead of the county of Isle of Wight eldest Son and heir at law of Lazarus Whitehead "deceased Who was the eldest brother and heir at law of Jesse Whitehead late of The county of Southampton Deceased of the one part and [page break] [p.] 114 Edwin Gray and William Thoms [Thomas] executor of the last will & Testament of Thomas Blunt late of the said County of Southampton deceased of the other part Whereas the said Thomas Blunt was in his life Time and at the time of his death seised in fee of several tracts of land in the county of Southampton but more particularly of one certain tract or parcel of land situate in the said county lying on the North side of Nottoway river containing by estimation seven hundred and ten acres purchased by the said Thomas Blunt by indenture bearing date the sixteenth day of August one Thousand seven hundred and sixty four of the executors of Henry Browne late of the county of Surry deceased pursuant to the directions Contained in his last will and Testament and the said Thomas Blunt being so seised made his last will and testament in writing bearing date the Twenty sixth day of September one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven and of such will appointed the said Edwin Gray and William Thomas partys hereto his executors who in the Court of the said County of Southampton duly proved the same obtained a probat & Took upon themselves The execution thereof in which said will amongst other things the said testator lent the use of the aforesaid plantation & lands to his wife Ann for the Term of her natural life and further directed and desired that after the death of his wife all his lands so lent should by his executors be sold for the best price that could be had and that The money arising therefrom should be applied as in and by the said will is parti= cularly directed and whereas by one certain indenture bearing date the sixteenth day of February one Thousand seven hundred and eighty One made between the said Ann Blunt by The of Ann Blunt widow and relict of Thomas Blunt deceased of the one part and the sd. Edwin Gray William Thomas and one Mills Godwin of the other part she the said Ann for the consideration therein expressed released and Conveyed to the said Edwin Gray William Thomas and Mills Godwin or either of them and to their assigns all her right title interest and life estate of in and to the aforesaid plantation and lands herein before mentioned for the purposes mentioned in the last will & Testament of the said Thomas Blunt deceased as above recited as in & by the said last Will and Deeds herein Mentioned duly recorded - reference being thereto had more fully and at large may appear and whereas the said Edwin Gray and William Thomas executors of the said Thomas Blunt deceased as will in virtue of the deed aforesaid as in pursuance of the last will of the said Thomas Blunt have made sale of the said plantation and Tract of land containing by estimation seven hundred and Ten acres as aforesd. at public action [sic; auction] to Jesse Whitehead for the sum of one thousand and Twenty eight pounds four Shillings and four pence being the most that could be had for The same and put the said Jesse Whitehead in possession thereof but before the deeds of Convey= ance were perfected the said Jesse Departed this life intestate [page break] [p.] 115 and without issue by means whereof the title to the said lands & premises are decended and come to The said Arthur Whitehead party to these presents in the eldest son & heir of Lazarus Whitehead who was the eldest brother and heir of the whole blood of the said Jesse Whitehead the purchaser. Now this indenture therefore Witnesseth that the said Edwin Gray and William Thomas executors of the last will and Testament of the said Thomas Blunt deceased in Virtue of the powers given to them in the said will & for and in consideration of the aforesaid sum of one thousand and Twenty eight pounds four shillings and four pence to them in hand paid and secured by the said Arthur Whitehead the heir at law of the said Jesse Whitehead deceased the purcha= ser at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof the said Edwin Gray and William Thomas do hereby acknowledge to be in confirmation of the sale aforesd. and for The use intents & purposes in the will of the said Thomas Blunt expresses and specified have granted bargained sold aliened released and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain sell alien release and confirm unto the said Arthur Whitehead and to his heirs and assigns forever all that plantation tract or parcel of land and premises - with the appurtenances situate lying and being in the parish of Nottoway and county of Southampton on the north side of Nottoway river containing by estimation seven hundred and ten Acres And bounded as is expressed in a patent granted to Henry Browne deceased bearing date the thirteenth day of March One Thousand seven hundred and fifty five and is The land herein before Mentioned to be purchased by the said Thomas Blunt of the said Henry Browne executors and all houses outhouses edifices buildings yards gardens Orchards Trees ways Waters water Courses profits Commodities hereditaments and appurtenances to The said tract or parcel of land and premises belonging or in any wise appertaining and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders rents Issues and profits thereof and all deeds evidences and writings touching or any wise concerning the same to have and to hold The said plantation tract or parcel of land and premises with the appurten= =ances unto the said Arthur Whitehead his heirs and assigns to The only proper use and behoof of the said Arthur Whitehead his heirs and assigns forever and the said Edwin Gray and William Thomas for themselves their heirs Executors and administrators do hereby promise & [page break] [p.] 116 grant to and with the said Arthur Whitehead his heirs and assigns the said plantation tract or parcel of land and premises a gainst themselves and their heirs and all others claiming un= =der them to the said Arthur Whitehead his heirs and assigns to Warrant and defend by these presents In Witness whereof the said Edwin Gray and William Thomas executors of The last Will and Testament of Thomas Blunt Deceased have to these presents set their hands and seales The day and Year first above Written Sealed and Delivered} In presents of } his Edwin Gray ¤Seal¤ John x Cobb mark Henry Godwin William Thomas ¤Seal¤ Josiah Gray _ Received of the Within named Arthur Whitehead The Sum of one Thousand and Twenty eight pounds four Shillings and four pence being the Consideration Money within ~ mentioned to be by him to be paid to ~ Witness Ż his John x Cobb Edwin Gray & Wm. Microfilm Reel 3 ****************************************************************************** *Later deeds state this tract - surveyed to be 783 acres, not 710 - came to Arthur WHITEHEAD, who sold it back to Thomas BLUNT's executors, 10 Dec 1784, who then re-sold it the same day to William WHITEHEAD, who then conveyed it in a deed of trust, 17 Dec 1789 (pr. 8 Apr 1793**), to trustees John BARROW, Nicholas MAGET [MAGETTE], Arthur WHITEHEAD & James WILKINSON, for the benefit of BLUNT's executors. Those trustees then sold the tract to Thomas EDMUNDS, 15 Aug 1791 (pr. 13 Oct 1791).
