     James SCOTT, deed of emancipation (of Pompey, Ben, Sam & Cherry), 
     dated and proved 12 Feb 1789

Slaves 

I  James Scott of Southampton County  Virginia having under my 
care a negro man Called Pompey aged about Sixty Years  a negro man 
named Ben aged about Thirty Years anegro  Boy named Sam born 
the second month one thousand Seven hundred and Seventy two and 
a negro girl named Cherry born the tenth month one thousand 
Seven hundred and eighty four  whom I have heretofore held 
as slaves but being of opinion that it is my duty to do by Others 
as Would be done by therefore I do hereby emancipate and set free 
the said Pompey Ben Sam and Cherry  and I do for myself my 
heirs Executors and Administrators hereby relinquish all my right 
title interest and Claim or pretention of claim whatsoever either to 
their persons or to any estate they may hereafter acquire  The 
above named pompey Ben Sam and Cherry and her posterity to 
enjoy their full freedom without any interruption from me 
or any person Claiming for by or under me Saving to myself 
my heirs and assigns the Care and direction of the above named 
Sam and cherry until they shall arrive to lawful age In Witness 
whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth 
day of the second Month in the year of Our Lord one thousand 
seven hundred and eighty nine

   James Jordan SCOTT, who left will 20 Oct 1774, proved 14 Dec 1774.

His widowed mother Miriam SCOTT emancipated her lot of slaves, 12 Feb 1789
