All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Deeds Elisha LANKFORD to William POPE, indenture & receipt dated 22 Apr 1793, proved 12 Feb 1796 [margin notes] Lankford} to } Pope } This Indenture made this 22.nd day of Ap_l in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & ninety three. between Elisha Lankford of the county of S.oampton & state of Virg.a of the one part & Will:m Pope of the county & state afores.d of the other part witnesseth that the s.d Elisha Lankford for & in consideration of the sum of two hundred & sixteen pounds current money of Virg_a to him in hand p.d the receipt whereof the s.d Elisha Lankford doth hereby acknowledge & therewith fully & entirely satisfyed contented & paid the s.d Elisha Lankford have bargained sold aliend enfeoff'd & confirm'd & by these presents doth bargain sell alien enfeoff & confirm unto the s.d Will_m Pope to him his heirs & assigns forever thre small tracts or parcels of land lying & being in Notoway parish & county of S.oampton the high land call'd the Orchard tract is bounded as followeth. Begining at a white oak a Corner tree in John Lawrences line thence S 2° west to the cypress swamp thence up the swamp to Thomas Mountfords line then along the s.d Mountfords line to the out line then to the first station The second piece is the tract called the Island not exceeding a mile distance Joining on the black water river begining where the miry branch makes into the Island then down the s.d branch to the cypress swamp, then down the s.d swamp on Joshua Joiners line to black water then up black black Water to G Tho.s Whites line then along the s.d Whites line on the high land joining the Island to the mirry branch to the first station &c It being the lands that Tho.s Lankford bought of Will.m Glover & given to his son Elisha Lankford party to these presents in his will containing in both s.d tracts by estimation one hundred & eighty acres be the same more or less. the third piece being the tract that Tho.s Lankford bought of Wade Mountfortt & also given to his son Elisha Lankfortt & bounded as followeth (to wit) begining at the mouth of Jacks Branch where it makes into the cypress swamp run then runing the water course of the s.d branch on Jn.o Joyners line till it makes out the s.d branch on the right hand to a red oak a corner tree ["stand" struck] standing ¯¯¯¯ [page break] [p.] 811 Standing near the mouth of a small branch which makes into Jacks branch thence up the branch to the head to a white oak a corner tree of Jn.o Bowers line thence a line of marked trees on the s.d bowers line to Hardy Johnsons line thence the s.d Johnsons line to a pine a corner tree in the meadow branch thence down the s.d branch to the path, then from the branch to a small hickory a mark'd tree thence a straight course to a red oak at the road then down the road about thirty feet to another red oak a marked tree thence a straight course ["thirty feet" struck] from the last afores.d line to a red oak near the s.d meadow branch thence down the s.d branch on Hardy Johnson line to the cypress swamp run then down the s.d run joining on Jn.o Lawrences land to the begining containing by estimation one hundred & eighty acres be the same more or less & in the three tracts as afores.d three hundred & sixty acres _ together with all woods ways water & water courses reversion & reversions remainder & remainders rents & issues thereof To have & to hold the s.d premises with all & singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging & the s.d Elisha Lankford do sell the s.d lands for three hundred & sixty acres be the same more or less and do warrant the s.d lands & premises unto the s.d Will.m Pope to him his heirs ex'ors. adm'ors. & assigns forever & the s.d Elisha Lankford do acquit himself his heirs ex'ors. adm'ors. or assigns & will warrant and forever defend the s.d lands & premis from any person or persons whatsoever from laying any manner of claim by from or under him _ In Witness whereof the said Elisha Lankford hath hereunto set his hand & seal the day & date first above Written Signed seald & delivered} in presence of } ¯¯¯ John Lewis } Elisha Lankford ¤seal¤ Elisha Lewis } _________"_________ W.m Evans } Shad Lewis } Mem.o That on this 22.nd day of Ap.l on ¯¯____"______ } thousand seven hundred & ninety three quiet & peaceable possession & seizn of the land & premises within mentioned was given & deliver'd by the within named Elisha Lankford unto the within named W.m Pope to hold to him & his heirs & assigns forever according to the true intent & meaning of the within deed.
