All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Land Records Jerusalem trustees to John CRICHLOW, deed of bargain & sale, ½a. lot, Jerusalem, 14 Oct 1796 (13 Oct 1796) [margin notes] Jerusalem trustees to Crichlow This Indenture, made this 14th. of October Anno Dom. 1796 between Edwin Gray James Wilkinson, Samuel Kello Benjamin Blunt Thomas Ridley Benjamin Ruffin Robert Goodwyn and John Taylor gentlemen trustees as herein after mentioned of the one part and John Crichlow of the county of Southampton of the other part witnesseth that whereas an act of the General assembly of Virginia passed december the seventh one thousand seven hundred and ninety one entitled an act to establish certain Towns, and for other purposes hath enacted that ten acres of land adjoining the court house of the county of Southampton, the property of Joseph & William Scott, should be and was thereby vested in Edwin Gray, James Wilkinson Samuel Kello Benjamin Blunt Thomas Ridley Benjamin Ruffin [page break] [p.] 350 Robert Goodwyn and John Taylor, gentlemen, trustees, to be by them or a majority of them laid of into lots of an half acre each, with convenient streets, and establish a town by the Name of Jerusalem. And Whereas the said act hath further directed that the said trustees, or a majority of them should proceed to sell the said lots at public auction for the best price that could be had for the same, and hath empowered the said trustees, to convey the same to the purchasers thereof in fee upon certain conditions which may be more particular known [by a reference to the said] act. Now this Indenture witnesseth that the said Edwin Gray James Wilkinson Samuel Kello Benjamin Blunt Thomas Ridley Benjamin Ruffin Robert Goodwyn and John Taylor. gentlemen trustees as afore said for an in consideration of the sum of twenty five pounds ten Shillings current money of Virginia to be paid by the said John Crichlow pursuant to the afore said act, to the said Joseph and William Scott former proprietors of the said lots or there legal representatives have bargained sold, alein'd and confirmed and by these presents do bargain, sell, alien, and confirm unto the said John Crichlow and his heirs forever one lot or parcel of land lying and being in the said town of Jerusalem and bounded as follows (Viz) Beginning on the main street thence along the Said main Street 125 feet 5 Inches to a post near Wrights Store thence S 77° W 178 feet 7 inches to the River thence up the River 125 feet 5 Inches & No. 77° E 178 feet 2 Inches to the begining together with all the profits privileges and appurtinances whatsoever, to the said primises belonging or in any ways appertaining. To have and to hold the said lot or parcel of land, with the apperti= =nances as aforesaid to the said John Crichlow and his Heirs forever. And the said John Crichlow for him self and his Heirs does hereby covenant and agree [to and] with the said trustees in the manner and form following Vizt. That the said John Crichlow or his Heirs shall and will build on the sd. lot a dwelling house 16 feet square at least with a brick or stone chimney to [be] finish'd fit for habitation within five Years from the date of these presents and also do punctually pay the money ariseing from the sale of the sale of the said lot, to the proprietors of the said lot or their legal representatives And the said trustees do covenant and agree with the said John Crichlow and his Heirs well and truly performing all and every the covenants and agreements which on their parts by the true intent and meaning of these presents, they ought to perform may peaceably and quietly enter upon, have sole possession and enjoy all the premises with the appurtenances above mention'd without the let trouble or hindrance of them the said trustees or [page break] [p.] (351) or any other person or persons claiming under them or any of them provided always that if the said John Crichlow and his heirs do and shall fail to build thereon within the time by the above recited act limited for that purpose that the trustees above named may there upon immediately enter into the aforesd. lot and sell it again pursuant to the above recited act In testimony whereof we the parties to these presents have hereunto interchangeably set our hands & affix'd our seals the day and Year first above said Sign'd sealed and deliver'd Benjamin Ruffin in presence of James Wilkinson John T. Blow Henry Briggs & Richd. Blow as to the other parties And ordered to be Recorded Sam. Kello Cl. ~-¤-~ Southampton Co., VA, Deed Book 8 (1793-98), pp. 349-51 The Library of Virginia (LVA), Richmond, VA, Southampton Microfilm Reel 4 John CRICHLOW conveyed Lot 1 in Jerusalem to James ROCHELLE, for the benefit of Samuel NICHOLSON, 9 Sep 1815 (4 Sep 1818). Trustee ROCHELLE sold Lot 1 at public auction, 16 Oct 1820 (court day) to Samuel NICHOLSON, and executed a deed for the same, 17 Oct 1820 (20 Nov 1820). (Southampton Co., VA, Deed Book 16, pp. 93-95,261-62) Lewis C. TREZVANT & wife Rebecca sold Lot 1 to Eliza W. WADDILL, 23 Oct 1828 (19 Jan 1829).
