This Indenture, made the thirteenth of October Anno Domini 
one thousand seven hundred and ninety six  Between Edwin Gray  James 
Wilkinson  Samuel Kello  Benjamin Blunt  Thomas Ridley  Benja. Ruffin 
Robert Goodwyn and John Taylor  Gentlemen trustees or a majority of 
them as appointed by act of the General Assembly of Virginia; bearing date Decr. the 
Seventh Anno Dom 1791 the purpose of laying off a town by the name 
of Jerusalem, on the land of Joseph & William Ccott adjoining the court 
house of Southampton of the one part and Joshua Fort of the other part. 
Witnesseth that the said trustees as aforesaid, for & in consideration of 
the sum of [blank] current money of Virginia to be paid by the 
said Joshua Fort persuant to the aforesaid act, to the said ['Joshua" struck] Joseph & Wm. 
Scott do bargain'd sell alin & confirm unto the said Joshua Fort & 
his Heirs forever  one lot or parcel of Land lying and being in the said 
town of Jerusalem  numbered fourteen; and bounded as follows  Vizt. 
begining at the north west corner of No. thirteen, on the east side of the 
main street; thence along the main street 90 feet 4 Inches to the south 
east corner of No. fifteen, thence along the line No. 15., 237 feet 9 Inches to 
Scott land, thence along Scotts line 90 feet 4 Inches to the north east 
corner of, No. 13, thence along the line of No. 13, 237 feet 9 Inches to the

begining.  To have & to hold the said lot or parcel of Land with the appur
=tinances thereunto belonging, to the said Joshua Fort & his Heirs forever 
& the said Joshua Fort doth hereby covenant & agree with the said trustees 
in the manner and form following  Viz. that the said Fort or his Heirs shall & will build on the 
said lot a dwelling house 16 feet square at least; with a brick or stone chimney 
to be finished fit for habitation in five years from the date of these presents, 
and also do punctually pay the money ariseing from the sale of the said lot 
to the former proprietors thereof or their legal representatives, & the said 
Trustees do covenant and agree to & with the said Joshua Fort & his Heirs 
will and truely performing all and every the covenants & agreements, which 
on their parts by the true intent & meaning of these presents, they ought 
to perform, and that the said J. Fort his Heirs or Assigns may peaceably 
& quietly enter upon  have hold possess and enjoy all the primises with the 
appurtinances above mentioned; provided the said Fort doth comply with 
the aforesaid covenant and agreement, but shoul'd the said Joshua Fort 
fail to build a house of the above discription then the said Trustees shall 
immediately enter into and make sale of the aforesaid lot persuant to 
the above mentioned Act.  In Witness whereof we the said Trustees 
     have hereunto set our hands and affix our seals the day & date first above writ=

This Indenture was acknowledge by Benjamin Ruffin one of the parties hereto 
and proved by the oaths of John T. Blow Jr. Henry Briggs & Richard Blow as to 
the other parties and ordered to be recorded
