Know all men by these presents that I Josiah Vick of the County of 
Southampton & State of Virginia for and in Consideration of the sum 
of two hundred Spanish milled dollars to him in hand paid by James 
Carriway of the County of Cumberland & State of North Carolina at & 
before the signing, Sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt 
whereof the said Josiah Vick doth hereby acknowledge and himself 
therewith fully satisfied Contented & paid, have bargained and Sold, & by these 
presents doth hereby bargain and Sell & deliver to the said James Carriway 
a certain Negro Girl called and known by the name of Conny - 
To have and to hold the said Negro Girl Conny unto the said James 
Carriway his heirs & assigns forever.  And the sd. Josiah Vick for 
himself, his heirs, executors & administrators, the said Negro Girl 
Conny, unto the said James Carriway his heirs and assigns shall 
and will warrant & forever defend by these presents, against the 
lawful claim of all and every person & persons whatsoever and 
whomsoever,_  In witness whereof, the said Josiah Vick hath 
hereunto set his hand, and affixed his Seal, this twentieth day 
of January, one thousand, seven hundred and ninety eight. _
