Exum Scott for and in consideration of the sum of Ten pounds, current money of Virginia to him in hand paid, by the said Thomas Hunt at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof the said Exum Scott doth hereby ac= knowledge, and thereof acquit and discharge the said Thomas Hunt, his heirs, Executors & Administrators, they [page break] [p.] 578 the said Exum Scott & Ann his wife Have bargained, Sold & delivered, aliened, released, & Confirmed, and by these presents do bargain, Sell and deliver, Alien, release & Confirm, unto the said Thomas Hunt, & to his heirs and Assigns, a certain tract or parcel of Land, containing ten Acres, situate lying and being in the County of Southampton on the North side of Nottoway River, and adjoining the town of Jerusalem, & bounded as follows to witt, begining at the South Corner of the Lott No. 18, being the Lott, whereon, the Tavern (now in Occupation of the sd. Hunt, stands from thence a Northerly Course, along the lines and bounds of the said Lotts, as they have been laid off, to the farthest corner, of the lot, sold by the sd. Scott, to Josiah Vick, thence by a line of Trees, and eastwardly course, to a corner, from thence a straight line, Southwardly to ano= ther corner, and from thence by another line, to the first Station so, as to comprehend, ten Acres, complete, to be assertained hereafter by actual Survey, the back lines to be run from the South corner of the tavern Lott, & the north corner of the furtherst Lott sold Josiah Vick, before mentioned, and all trees, ways, waters, water Courses, profits, commodities, hereditaments, and appurtenances to the same belonging, or in any wise appurtaining, and the reversion and reversions, remainder & remainders, rents, Issues & services thereof, and of every part thereof, to have and to hold all and singular the premises before mentioned, to the said Thomas Hunt, his heirs and Assigns, to the only proper use and behoof, of him the said Thomas Hunt, his heirs & assigns forever, And they the sd. Exum Scott, & Ann his wife, for themselves, their heirs, executors & Adm'rs. promise, covenant and Grant, to and with the said Thomas Hunt, his heirs executors, Adm'rs. & Assigns, that they the said Exum Scott & Ann his wife by these presents, will warrant and defend the Title of the sd. lands & premises aforesaid with the peacable possession of the same, against all persons legally claiming the same, In witness whereof the sd. Haussmann } Exum Scott Aug.C. Cocke } At a Court held for the County of Southampton. the 15th. day of May 1797 This Indenture was proved by the oaths of John D. Haussmann & Aug.C. Cocke two of the witnesses thereto & Continued & at a Court held for the sd. County the 15th. day of January 1798 the sd. Indenture was proved by the oath of Samuel Kello another witness thereto, and ordered to be recorded _ Saml. Kello Cl. ~-¤-~ Southampton Co., VA, Deed Book 8 (1793-98), pp. 577-78 The Library of Virginia (LVA), Richmond, VA, Southampton Microfilm Reel 4 Richard H. BLOW sold this 10-acre tract, and 1/6 interest in Lots 18 & 19 to Henry GURLEY, 11 Nov 1822. It describes the tract as "adjoining the Town of Jerusalem being part of the Land which Hunt and Adams purchased of Exum Scott and then Sold to Colo. Samuel Kello commonly called the Court House Tract." (Southampton Co. DB19:13) Joseph B. WHITEHEAD, deputy for William McCANDLISH, Marshall of the Superior Court of Chancery for the Williamsburg district, sold ½ of Lots 18 & 19 to Robert GOODWYN, 3 Jun 1828 (16 Jun 1828), "in pursuance of a Decree... in the Case of John Urquhart against James Rochelle adm' of Samuel Kello & George Gurley Ex'or of Josiah Vick and others." (Southampton Co. DB20:396) That suit is not found in the Southampton Co. chancery cases, but Josiah VICK's widow Elizabeth sued George GURLEY twice: 1813-012 & 1818-037). The decree divided KELLO's part of Lots 18 & 19 between the Robert GOODWYN, the heirs of Henry GURLEY, and Edwin RICKS; RICKS sold his part, the Stable lot to GOODWYN, 6 Sep 1828 (Sep 1828).
