Evins Decr. 3rd. 1800 This Indenture made this nineteenth day of March in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred & ninety eight Between Edwin Gray, Samuel Kello, Benjamin Blunt, Thomas Ridley, Benja. Ruffin Robert Goodwynn, John Taylor & James Wilkinson Gentlemen Trustees, as herein mentioned, of the one part, & William Evans & Benjamin Evans of the County of Southampton of the other part Wit =nesseth, that whereas an Act of the General Assembly of Virginia passed December the twentieth [sic] one thousand seven hundred & ninety one entitled an act to establish certain Towns & for other purposes, hath enacted that Ten Acres of land adjoining the Courthouse of the County of Southampton the property of Joseph & William Scott, should be and was thereby vested in Edwin Gray Samuel Kello, Benjamin Blunt, Thomas Ridley, Benja. Ruffin Robert Goodwyn, John Taylor & James Wilkinson Gentlemen Trustees to be by them, or a majority of them, laid off into Lotts of an half Acre each, with Convenient Streets; and establish a Town by the name of Jerusalem, and whereas the sd. Act hath further directed that the sd. trustees or a majority of them, should proceed to sell the said Lotts, at public auction for the best price that Could be had for the same, and hath impowered the sd. Trustees to convey the same to the purchasers thereof, in fee, upon certain conditions which may be more particularly known by a reference to the sd. act Now This Indenture witnesseth, that the sd. Edwin Gray, Saml. Kello Benjamin Blunt, Thos. Ridley, Benja. Ruffin, Robt. Goodwyn [page break] [p.] 594 James Wilkinson & John Taylor Gentlemen Trustees as aforesaid for and in Consideration of the sum of Twenty four pounds current money of Virginia, to them in hand paid by the sd. William Evans & Benjamin Evans, pursuant to the aforesaid Act, Have bar= gained and sold, and by these presents doth hereby bargain, Sell, alien Enfeoff and forever confirm unto the said William Evans & Benjamin Evans, to them and their heirs forever, one lott or parcel of land, lying & being situate in the sd. town of Jerusalem, and bounded as follows (Viz) Begining at the N.W. corner of Lot No. 14 on the main street thence along the main Street 90 feet 4 Inches to the S.W. corner of Lott No. 16, thence along the line [of] No. 16, 237 feet 9 Inches to Scotts land, thence along Scotts line 90 feet 4 Inches to the N.E. Corner of No. 14. thence along the line of No. 14, 237 feet 9 inches to the begining, Together with all houses, ways, waters, profits, priviledges and appurtenances whatsoever to the said premises belonging, or in any wise appurtaining. To have and to hold the said Lott or parcel of land with every of the appurtenances unto the said William Evans & Benjamin Evans to them and their heirs forever, and the sd. Edwin Gray Samuel Kello, Benjamin Blunt Thomas Ridley, Benjamin Ruffin, Robert Goodwyn James Wilkin= son & John Taylor, Gentlemen Trustees as aforesaid for themselves do covenant and agree with the sd. William Evans and Benjamin Evans, having well and truly performed, all and every the Covenants & agreements, which on their parts by the true intent & meaning of these presents, they ought to have performed, may peaceably & quietly enter upon, Have, hold, Possess and Enjoy all the premises with the appurtenances, above mentioned, without the let, trouble or hindrance of them the said Trustees, or any other person or persons claiming under them, or any of them, and that they the said Trustees, will warrant and forever defend, the said Lott & premises with the appurtenances, unto the said William Evans & Benja. Evans or their heirs in fee Simple. And at a Court held for the said County the 21st. day of May 1798 The said Indenture was proved by the Oaths of Thomas Vaughan, George Gurley jr. & George Blow the witnesses thereto and Ordered to be recorded Saml. EVANS Jan 1803. (Southampton Co. Deed Book 9:493-94) John WALTERS sold Lot 14 to Dr. Henry M. GRAY, 19 Mar 1810 (21 May 1810). (Southampton Co. DB12:166) Dr. GRAY d. 11-17 May 1814, leaving his estate to his unnamed infant son, after the death of his widow Martha F.B. GRAY - half immediately if she remarried; executor, James ROCHELLE. (Southampton Co. WB7B:367-68) James A. GRAY sold his interest in Lots 14 & 15 to James ROCHELLE, 18 Jun 1821 (17 Dec 1821). Juliana GRAY sold her interest in Lots 14 & 15 to ROCHELLE, 5 Sep 1821 (17 Dec 1821). George H. GRAY sold his interest to ROCHELLE, 27 Jul 1821 (17 Dec 1821). (Southampton Co.
