        deed of bargain & sale, Lot 8, Jerusalem, 
        20 Mar 1798 (21 Aug 1798)

This Indenture, made the twentieth Day of March 
Anno Domini one thousand seveven [sic] hundred and Ninety Eight 
 Between Edwin Gray  James Wilkinson, Samuel Kello, Benjn. 
Blunt, Thomas Ridley, Ben. Ruffin, Robert Goodwyn & John Taylor 
Gentlemen justices or a majority of them as appointed by act of Assembly 
of Virginia  bearing Date the seventh Day of December Anno Dom 179one 
for the purpose of lay off a Town by the Name of Jerusalem on the 
Lands of Joseph & Wm. Scott adjoining the Courthouse of Southampton 
County, of the one part & Joshua Fort of the other, Witnesseth that the 
said trustees as aforesaid for and in consideration of eleven pounds, twelve 
Shillings current money of Virginia to be paid by the said Jos. Fort 
pursuant to the aforesaid act, to the said Joseph & Wm. Scott do bargain sell and 
alien & confirm unto the said Jos. Fort & his heirs forever  one Lott or parcel 
of Land lying and being in the said Town of Jerusalem  Numbered Eight; 
and bounded as follows  Vizt. begining at the South East corner of No. 7. on the 
west side of the main Street, thence along the Main Street Ninety feet 
four Inches to Scotts land (since bought by Josiah Vick) thence along 
the said line two hundred & thirty seven feet nine Inches to the South 
East corner of No. 9  thence along the line on the east of No. 9, ninety 
feet four Inches to the South west corner of No. 7, thence to the begining 
containing one half of an Acre as Laid off by the commissioners __ 
To have and to hold the said Lot, or parcel of Land with the appurtenances 
thereunto belonging to the said J. Fort and his heirs forever; and the said 
J. Fort doth covenant & agree with the said trustees in the manner & 
form following  Viz. that the said Fort or his Heirs shall & will build 
on the said Lot, a dwelling house sixteen feet Square at least with a 
brick or Stone Chimney to be finnished fit for habitation in [blank] Years 
from the date of these presents & also do punctually pay the money ariseing 
from the sale of the said Lot, to the former propritors thereof or their Legal 
representatives  & the said trustees do covenant & agree to & with the said 
Fort & his heirs well & truly to perform all and every the covenants & 
agreements, which on their parts by the true intent & meaning of 
these presents, they ought to perform, & that the said J. Fort & his 
heirs only may peaceably & quietly enter upon  have, hold, possess, & 
enjoy all the primises with the appurtinances above mentioned  provided 
the said Joshua Fort doth Comply with the aforesaid covenant & 
agreement  but should the said Fort fail to build a house of the 
above discription then the said Trustees shall immediately enter 
into and make sale of the aforesaid Lot persuant to the above mentioned act

James Irwin  Wm. Crichlow and Benjamin Evans ["three of" struck] the witnesses
