Know ye that for divers good causes & Considerac'ons, but more especially for & in Considerac'on of his Importac'on of five persons to dwell within this our Colony of Virginia whose names are Mattw. Kelly, Nicholas Hutchinson, John Poor, Alexander Salmon & Mary Buttery We have Given, Granted & Confirmed & by these presents for us our heirs & successors do Give, Grant & Confirm unto James Atkinson junr. of the county of Isle of Wight one certain tract or parcel of Land containing two hundred & fifty acres lieing & being on the south side of the main black water in the sd. County of Isle of Wight & bounded as followeth, to wit, beginning at a double Gum on the south side of Tarrapin swamp then south twelve degrees west sixty seven pole to a red oak then south sixty degrees East twenty nine pole to a red oak then north sixty six degrees east one hundred & fifty six pole to Tarrapin swamp aforesaid then down the run of the said swamp to the mouth of Gum branch & up the run of that branch seventy pole to a marked hickory then west one hundred - seventy eight pole to two white oaks then north thirty degrees west eighty one pole to two Live oaks then north seventy degrees west one hundred pole to a pine saplin then north sixty degrees west one hundred eighty three pole to a red oak then south seventy five degrees west twenty two pole to a pine by a branch side wch: branch divides this Land from the Land of Wm. The reference apparently is not to modern Terrapin Swamp - the northernmost in the county - but rather, to Hickaneck Swamp - the next to the south.
