Page} George &c To all &c Know ye That for diverse good Causes and Considerac'ons but more especially for and in Considerac'on of the Sum of Twenty Shillings of good and lawful mony for Our use paid to Our Receiver General of Our Revenues in this Our Colony and Dominion of Virginia We have given granted and Confirmed And by these Presents for Us ~ Our Heirs and Successors do give grant and Confirm unto Edward Britt of Isle of Wight County One Certain Tract or Parcell of Land containing One hundred and Seventy Acres lying and being on both Sides of Tarapin Branch on the South Side of the Main Blackwater Swamp in the County aforesaid and bounded as followeth (towit) Begining at a red Oak a Line Tree of degrees William Kinchins Land Thence South Sixty Five ^ West Sixty Pole to a red Oak Then North Seventy degrees west Fifty Pole to a white Oak Then - North Twenty Degrees West One hundred and Seventy One pole to a Pine Then South Sixty degrees East Seventy Three pole to a White Oak Then South Fifteen degrees East One hundred and Six Pole to a Lightwood Post in William Kinchins Line aforesaid And by his Line South Seventeen degrees West Seventy pole - to the Begining With all &c To Have &c To be held &c Yielding and - paying &c Provided &c In Witness &c Witness Our Trusty and Wellbeloved Hugh Drysdale Esq. our Lt. While this patent is given as being in Isle of Wight Co., it lies in that portion from which Southampton Co. was formed in 1749. The reference apparently is not to modern Terrapin Swamp - the northernmost in the county - but rather, to Hickaneck Swamp - the next to the south.
