EDWARDS & wife Martha to Matthew MOUNTFORT, indenture dated 3 Feb 1819, acknowledged 24 Feb 1819, admitted 15 Mar 1819 [margin notes] Edwards & wife To Mountfort This Indenture made this 3.rd day of Feb.y in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nineteen, between Jeremiah E. Edwards and Martha Edwards his wife of Southampton County and State of Virginia of the one part, and Matthew Mountfort of county and state aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that the said Jeremiah E. Edwards for and in consideration of the sum of twenty five dollars to them in hand paid by the said Matthew Mountfort, the receipt whereof the said Jeremiah E. Edwards and Martha his wife doth hereby acknowledge, they the said Jeremiah E. Edwards and Martha grant, bargain and sell, alien and confirm unto the said Matthew Mountfort his heirs & assigns forever all that piece or parcel of land, situate in the County aforesaid and bounded as follows__ Beginning at a pine a corner tree standing in the line branch between said Mountfort and said Edward thence Southwestwardly a line of marked trees adjoining the said Mountfort to a dogwood a corner tree between said Edwards in Jno. Moores line to a dogwood a thence Southeastwardly a line of marked trees intersection of the new corner tree between said Mountfort & s.d Edwards in John Moore line, thence Eastwardly a line of marked trees to a gum a new corner standing in the above named branch, between the s.d Mountfort and said Edwards, thence the various courses up the s.d branch to the first station, by estimation five acres may the Same more or less. To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land unto the said Matthew Mountfort his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Matthew Mountfort his heirs and assigns forever, and the said Jeremiah E. Edwards and Martha his wife for themselves their heirs executors and adm'rs the said tract or parcel of land with all and every its appurtenances unto him the Said Matthew Mountfort his heirs and Shall and will forever warrant and defend. In witness whereof the said Jeremiah E. Edwards and Martha his wife hath hereunto set their hands and seals, the day and year before written } his Signed Sealed and } Jeremiah E. Edwards and she acknowledges that she signed the within deedof conveyance of real estate freely & voluntarily without the threats or pursuasions of her said husband and that she did not wish to retract it, and She wishes the said conveyance to be recorded in the County court of So. ampton Given under our hands this 3.rd day of February 1819.
