Examd. This Indenture made this 10th. day of July in the Year of our Lord Christ One thousand Eight Hundred and twenty between Lemuel Stanton and Martha his Wife James Jones and Caty his Wife and William Joiner and Sally his Wife all of the county of Southampton and parish of Nottoway of the one part and Jonathan Lankford and Samuel Turner Trustees for the benefit of the baptist Church at black creek and their Successors which the said church may from time to time appoint: fo'ever of the other part Witnesseth that the Said Lemuel Stanton and Martha his Wife James Jones and Caty his Wife and William Joiner and Sally his Wife for and in codsideration [sic] of the real love that they bear toward trüe and Vital religion and this establishment of Houses for the purpose of publick worship and more especially for the Sum of five dollars to them in hand paid by the said Jonathan Lank =ford and Samuel Turner trustees as aforesaid good and Lawfull m= oney of Virginia the receipt whereof the said Lemuel Stanton and martha his wife James Jones and Caty his wife & William Joyner and Sally his wife doth acknowledge themselves fully and [page break] [p.] 169 and amply satisfied and paid hath granted bargained Sold aliend enfeoff & confirmed and by these presents doth grant bargain and Sell unto the said Jonathan Lankford & Samuel Turner Trustees for the benefit of the Baptist Church at black creek and their Successors which the Said Church may from time to time appoint foever One certain piece or parcel of Land and its premises for the use of the Said church and no other as aforesaid containing by a late survey made by the Surveyor of So.ampton County aforesaid four acres be the Same more or less and bounded as follows (tWit) Begining at a Small red oak a cr. of Lemuel Stanton standing not far from the edge of a Small Branch thence S 80 W. 13 pole to another small red oak a cr. of the Said Lemuel Stanton thence S 26° E 59 pole to a pine Cr. made in the meeting House land and now in James Jones line On the side of the road leading from black water bridge to Jerusalem thence along the Said road making it the boundary line of the meeting House land and the Said James Jones say N. 50 E. or nearly 13 pole to a small red oak a cr. made in James Jones' Land and on the Side of the Same road thence N 26 W 50 pole to the first Station with all Houses out Houses Edifices buildings &c together With all the priviledges and appurtanances thereunto now belonging Or ever heafter may belong thereunto for the Only proper use of the Church aforesaid as before expressed unto the Said Jonathan Lankford and Samuel Turner and their Successors as aforesaid and the Said Lemuel Stanton & Martha his Wife James Jones and Caty his Wife and William Joyner & Sally his Wife for themselves their heirs &C doth by these presents covenant And grant to and with the Said Jonathan Lankford and Samuel Turner trustees as aforesaid that they will warrant and foever defend the right title claim or demand of any person or persons claiming the Same Inwitness whereof the Sd. parties to this deed hath hereto Set their hands and affixed their Seals this day and date before Written Signed Sealed and declared in Lemuel Stanton ĪSealĪ presence of us Martha Stanton ĪSealĪ James Jones ĪSealĪ Caty Jones ĪSealĪ William Joyner ĪSealĪ Sally Joyner ĪSealĪ [margin note] Examd. [page break] [p.] 170 Southampton County (To Wit We Carr Bowers and Benjamin Griffin Justices of the peace in the county aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Martha Stanton the wife of Lemuel Stanton Caty Jones the Wife of James Jones and Sally Joyner the Wife of William Joiner all parties to the within indenture for the conveyance of real estate of Jonathan Lank_ ford and ["Lemuel" struck] Samuel Turner trustees as within expressed bearing date the 10th. day of July 1820 personally appeared before us in our county aforesaid and being examined privately and a part from their Said Husbands and having the deed fully explained to them that they the Said Martha Stanton Caty and Sally Joiner acknowledged the Same to be their act and deed and declared each of them that they had willingly signed Sealed and declared The Same and that they wished not to retract it Given under our hands and Seals this 17th. day of July 1820 Carr Bowers ĪSealĪ Benjamin Griffin ĪSealĪ Southampton County In the clerks office the 17.th day July 1820 This Indenture was acknowledged by Lemuel Stanton and William Joyner two of the parties hereto and together with the Certifi cate thereon endorsed, Certifying the acknowledgment and privy examina =tion of Martha Stanton Caty Jones and Sally Joyner parties hereto and admitted to record. (Order Book 1816-19, p. 65) He wed William WILLS & Mrs. Elizabeth TURNER the next day. Southampton Co. M.Reg. 1750-1853, p. 251 (et al.) LANKFORD announced in Dec 1825 that he had come to believe slavery was unjust. After months of controversy, prominent laymen - led by Carr BOWERS - voted in Sep 1826 that LANKFORD be removed from the church roster. Daniel W. Crofts.
